Most past presidents probably wouldn't say anything publicly about the bombshell firing Wednesday morning of NBC's Matt Lauer for "inappropriate sexual behavior." And, if they did say something, it would be along the lines of "Even the highest profile among us are not and should not be immune from being punished for these sorts of unacceptable behaviors."
Donald Trump, of course, is nothing like any past president -- a fact he proved again Wednesday morning with his tweet about Lauer's firing.
That Trump saw opportunity in the news of Lauer's dismissal to make a point about the so-called "Fake News" is not terribly surprising. It's the one consistent through line of his presidential politics.
It has served him well, politically speaking. His 2016 campaign was fueled by bullying and cruel jokes at the expense first of his Republican primary rivals and then Hillary Clinton. Trump's voters ate up his willingness to punch back against anyone at any time. He's saying the stuff I've been thinking! He won't back down from anyone!
Low road. Low road. Low road. Every damn time.
Why? That's a question only Trump can answer -- and it's not clear he would even know what to say. It's just who he is. He grew up learning that if someone tries to go low on you, the way to win is to go even lower -- and to make clear to them (and everyone else) that you are willing to go even lower still.
Trump views every event -- from white supremacist violence in Charlottesville to the firing of Lauer for inappropriate workplace behavior -- as an opportunity to score political points or prove himself right about something or other.
For him, taking the low road isn't an option. It's the only option.

Chris, my idiot friend, you have just answered your own question.
Let’s do a rewrite without their editorial spin.
“He grew up learning that if someone tries to punch you, the way to win is to punch back — and to make clear to them (and everyone else) that you are willing to punch even harder.
That’s an unbiased sentence. This is their sentence.
” He grew up learning that if someone tries to go low on you, the way to win is to go even lower — and to make clear to them (and everyone else) that you are willing to go even lower still.”
The Fake News retards just can't help themselves, can they. They know what happened in Charlottesville was a staged and planned Soros-funded Antifa event. Yet they lie, lie lie. Every time they open their lying lips - they lie.
Low road. Low road. Low road. Every damn time.
Funny, I thought President Trump took the high road on this matter, as he does on most. He gets out in front and LEADS!!!
Does CNN ever get tired of ramming their network into the same brick wall over and over again? Move on idiots!
They love the cowering Republicans that run and hide so much better.
Team Hillary Clinton cheers Matt Lauer’s firing, says he was mean to her!

The abrupt firing of NBC “Today” co-host Matt Lauer announced Wednesday prompted cheers among Hillary Clintons loyalists who feel that he was extraordinarily mean to her and soft on President Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign.
Another person whose interview with Trump was ridiculously soft and interview with Hillary was incredibly tough: Matt Lauer, tweeted former Clinton aide Neera Tanden, president of the Center for American Progress.
The guy had friggin' issues.
Fake news from the master fake news organization. The opinion from this twit is the low road
And then hooking up on the side with Bill Clinton and Anthony Wiener...
Never forget CNN applauded when Bill Clinton played the bongos or when Obama flipped Hillary the bird - calling it clever and well played.
Soon it will be CNN’s turn to be in the cross hairs of a major sexual harassment allegation.
Lol! How could there be a lower road than an MSM outlet?
Trump should tweet that.
Nope.
It’s the pot calling the silver tea service black.
What an idiot. The low road is matt laur.
