No soup for you? Campbell plunges on poor sales
CNN ^ | November 21, 2017 | Paul R. La Monica

When the thing your company is named for is no longer selling all that well, that's a big problem. Just ask Campbell Soup, which reported lousy earnings Tuesday because of weak soup sales. Shares of Campbell Soup (CPB) plunged more than 7% after the food giant said that soup sales in the U.S. fell 9% from a year ago. The company also lowered its earnings outlook for fiscal 2018.

With recipes!

Many of my recipes use shortcuts, like frozen soup starters.

But the chicken noodle and beef stew are totally from scratch.

Make your own. It’s not as difficult as you think and it’s far, far better. Commercially canned soups have way too much salt, even the low sodium versions.

It’s worth the time and effort IMO.

I agree. I’m glad soup weather is here.

If you are comparing the condensed soup to Progresso, yes. Campbell’s does have the comparable “Chunky” and home-style lines that are not condensed that are similar to Progresso.

I used to eat soup on a regular basis but in recent years for some reason just haven’t done so nearly as much...I guess I was not alone in this trend based on this article.

Agree - the store / off brands are pretty much identical on most of the cheap condensed soups. Only Cream of Chicken seems to be better.

I haven’t seen that commercial but given the number of people who have mentioned it in this thread it apparently did have an impact...opposite of attracting people to the product - since the commercial was used to promote a political agenda and not the product itself...why would they think it would be effective in getting more people to buy a product? Even if people support that agenda they aren’t seeing the commercial promoting a soup but instead that agenda. Rather unwise marketing campaign.

There was a comment, years ago, that Campbells learned how to can salt.

I do prefer the “chunky” style to the traditional “condensed” varieties.

I haven't bought Campbell's since the two daddies commercial.

I don't think I've ever seen that commercial, thank goodness! Campbell's soup is too damn salty.

I wouldn't want Campbell's Soup running an 'NRA positive' ad either... just keep politics out of the mix.

When liberal Madison Avenue ad people want to push liberal politics in ads the company should tell them "NO".

"No, we sell soup to all Americans - not just liberal elites and their pet victim group members... so, dump the political comments."

You might be allergic to soy... lots of companies use that in everything - must be really cheap stuff...

“I was raised on their tomato soup made with milk instead of water, true comfort food.”

I used to envy the kids down the street; they got canned chicken noodle soup for lunch. My mother was never much for making soup anyway, but she never bought a can of soup in her life. She was overly thrifty, and said the stuff was just salt and water, anyway. I make my own soup, but my husband does like canned tomato soup. My homemade tomato soup tastes identical, but the texture is thicker, so he doesn’t care for it. (For you cooks out there, the secret ingredient is a pinch of allspice).

Progresso is owned by General Mills. I had a laugh when I went to their site; they own both Gold Medal and Pillsbury Flour!

Ever notice the tomato soup and the sauce in the Campbell’s canned spaghetti are the same?

"When liberal Madison Avenue ad people want to push liberal politics in ads the company should tell them "NO". "

The company's management doesn't really have much say in the matter. Campbell Soup is majority owned by the same people that are behind the push to the NWO. If you want to get to the top of the ranks in big business you have to understand who the top bosses are and what they expect from you. Hint: neither profits nor market share are your primary goal. First and foremost you advance the cause. After that you are allowed to compete for the $$$.

Unfortunately he says they haven’t found a way to do that while making them taste good.

Well, they COULD try adding in REAL food. When you leave the salt out of something that is 90% water, it’s going to be tasteless.

Sure, soak meat and/or veggies in hot water. Leave the most of the salt out. You need some to drive flavor exchange.

Seriously though, soup and stock are dead easy to make yourself. The use of stock as a flavor base is one of the things that set professional cooking apart from home cooking.
