At a press conference today, an FBI official investigating the man who killed 26 people in a Texas church on Sunday said the agency can't open the shooter's encrypted phone. The agent painted the issue as a growing concern among law enforcement at all levels who can't access data on devices without their owner's credentials. It's essentially the same argument the FBI made two years ago when it demanded Apple help break into the phone of the San Bernardino shooter, a conflict that escalated into the courtroom.

They have the body. Use the perp’s fingers. Of course, if he has it set to brick after 10 tries, they could have used them up.
Send it to Israel.
Mossad can do.................
They're just looking to create a profile...nothing more.
1. Get a frickin’ warrant. Shouldn’t be hard.
2. Unlock this phone only. Shouldn’t be hard.
“I cant imagine that the manufacturer would deny helping in this instance.”
I can———a lib.
.
I agree, but privacy comes to an end when the individual is deceased — especially in a case like this where he’s deceased after killing a bunch of people.
Unlock one and you’ve unlocked them all.
FBI wants the crypto key, not an unlocked phone handed back to them.
The crime is done and he killer is dead. Why do they need it?
“Ask the Russians for help.”
Or take it to some fifth grade class, or their grandchildren. Those kids probably can figure it out in 10 minutes.
Yep.
NSA or Israelis could crack it in timely manner. They are looking for a law that says their now-illegal surveillance is legal.
“FBI wants the crypto key, not an unlocked phone handed back to them.”
Well, the FBI needs to lower their expectations. That’s over the top and none of their business.
I suspect strongly I already have one. (iPhone)
Must suck to be police and have to actually investigate things. It's like ... work or something.
There’s nothing to be learned from the phone.
Psycho wife & child beater had argument w ex-MIL.
Atheist hated Christians and shot up ex-Fam’s church.
I thought the FBI used a company in Israel to get into the iPhone(s) of the San Diego terrorists. The Feds filed a lawsuit to force Apple to turn over the unlocking procedures, but then withdrew the case when they were able to get "Cellebrite, a privately held Israeli company that specializes in transferring and extracting data from phones..." The FBI wouldn't confirm they'd used that company.
Apple told the FBI to go pound sand.
If they really need the data, they can get it from the NSA.
Of course that would be admitting that the NSA is quite illegally and very unconstitutionally monitoring everyone.
Won't help if it's an iPhone. Need a live finger for it to work.
Of course, if he has it set to brick after 10 tries, they could have used them up.
There is that as well.
Me too!
