Republican Ed Gillespie is now narrowly leading the Virginia gubernatorial race by 3 points, according to a new poll, just three days before Tuesday's election.
The new poll of likely Virginia voters by Republican firm Optimus/Firehouse Strategies over Wednesday and Thursday shows Gillespie leading his Democratic opponent Ralph Northam by 40.4 percent to 37.4 percent. His lead is just outside the poll's margin of error.
Recent polls have suggested a late-game comeback for Gillespie, who trailed Northam by a small margin for recent months of the race, with a Friday poll showing the two locked in a dead heat at 47 percent apiece.
However, Northam is predicted to win by a 1.5 point margin if voter turnout mirrors 2016 levels, the poll said, citing "volatile" party composition. The poll used a model based on 2013 voter turnout to predict a Gillespie win.
An average of major polls still shows Northam with a slight lead of 1.2 points, which marks a steep decline over recent weeks from averages favoring the Democrat by over 3 points.
The contentious Virginia election has invited the support of national political figures such as former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush, each stumping and fundraising for their party's nominees.

Well within striking distance for the Dirty Tricks arm of the DemocRat Party.
Rats blew it Ha
The real numbers could be higher for Gillespie if they are admitting this.
The mid Atlantic has had it fair share of crappy polling in the past decade or so. Too many of them are way off, especially VA. I suspect that the MS13 loving democrat was never 7 points ahead in the first place.
So who's stumping for Republican Gillespie?
You would have thought after the “Deplorables” debacle the Rats would have learned something.
Apparently not.
Had a fun morning yesterday attending WMAL’s 4 hr. radio broadcast that focused on the Virginia election. Lots of candidates, former office holders, and conservative organizations cycled through. Very proud of our candidates this time and their issues -focused campaigns.
I hope he wins. That horrible “pick-up truck chasing minority kids” ad was an utter disgrace.
WOW! If the Dems lose this one, in what is now a strong-blue state, and given Trump’s (supposed) unpopularity, the party may well be on the verge of EXTINCTION.
I NEVER thought I’d live to see this day.
(so, no, I don’t care if Gillepsie is a RINO, there are MUCH MORE IMPORTANT things at stake here)
If the margin is <5%, fraud will win for the Rat
That video portraying Republicans as running over minorities right before the Jihadist actually did it in NY disgusted so many people I think it might have cost that Dem stooge the election
“in what is now a strong-blue state”
Virginia is still purple. Republicans have both chambers of the general assembly and 8 of 11 US House seats. We had all 3 executive offices last time and McAuliffe only won because dems fabricated lies about the GOP hov, Mcdonnell.
Isn’t it in Virginia where 60 thousand prisoners were given the right to vote? If so...it ain’t gonna happen.. VA will stay in the hands of the rats!! That state should have been won by trump but the inmate vote hurdle the side of beef over the top! How ironic crooked Hillary associated with the inmate vote! Lock her up!
The Gadsden flag license plate in that ad is everywhere. Zillions of them. Tea party groups are the ones who buy it mostly. Everyone’s seen the ad by now. If they were lukewarm before, they’re red hot angry now and should be motivated to show up on Tuesday. None of us respond to pollsters.
You have hit the golden nail right on the head. If the Republicans, Conservatives, Trumpers massively turnout for Ed Gillespie and Gillespie wins....it could actually politically kill the entire Democrat Party.
And...if the Gillespie Governor victory does not destroy the entire Democrat Party...it will deliver a near fatal political wound that will lead to the political destruction of the entire Democrat Party in the Mid-Term elections of 2018.
I would suggest that many Democrats start voting “Yes” with the Trump political agenda program, or they will not have jobs after November, 2018!!!
Go Ed Gillespie, Go POTUS, Donald J. Trump......MAGA!!!
I can assure you that Virginia was indeed won by Donald J. Trump. Virginia, especially under the criminal leadership of Governor,Terry McAullife, the Butcher/Murderer of the Charlotteville, VA riots, Barack Hussein Obama and Hillary Clinton has been using thousands of illegal alien and fraud votes for many years.
How is God’s name could Hillary Clinton, the worst POTUS candidate in American history get three million more votes the DJT? Answer.....uncontrolled illegal and fraud votes.
Had these votes not been counted as legal votes trump wins Nevada, Minnesota, New Hampshire & Virginia. End of story!!!
Virginians, turn out in massive numbers and vote for Republican, Ed Gillespie for governor and help us politically destroy the entire Democrat Party!!!
Go Gillespie, Go Trump......Make Virginia & America Red & Great Again!!!
Im changing my prediction. This is going to be super close but I think Amnesty Ed will pull it out in the end. Why:
-Amnesty Ed has run a competent campaign. This is almost unheard of for a Virginia gop gubernatorial candidate. But he has done a surprisingly good job. No stupid mistakes so far.
-The ad. It did p### off some folks that otherwise stay home.
- Northam isnt rallying the rat base.
-Corey Stewart has been actively campaigning for him and DJT has endorsed. Politics makes strange bedfellows.
-Down ticket candidates are pretty good and may have a small coattail effect.
I guess it can go either way. The election that they will be comparing it to though, was the Trump/Clinton election, where Clinton won the state by over 5 points. That’s what led to my comment.
snicker ...
