Whether or not bump stocks end up banned is a trivial matter. The war over the Second Amendment will not hinge on the outcome of this particular battle. Both sides know this; the importance of the issue is entirely psychological.
For progressives, a win would be a move in the right direction, evidence that conservatives are vulnerable. It would be comparable to the Doolittle Raid against the Japanese homeland in 1942 a strike of no great strategic import but invaluable as a way to shift national confidence from the Japanese to the American side.
For conservatives, there is little to be gained by thwarting this progressive gambit (which is the reason some are prepared to make a tactical retreat). Why expend resources on such an insignificant matter when winning it will not much advance the Second Amendment cause? Why, indeed! The answer is that a defensive mindset leads to defeat. Fainthearted people rarely win at war. This is no less true for a political war than it is for a military one.
If either side in a war is not totally committed to the principle for which it stands, then the other side wins. It may take a week, or it may take years, but ultimate victory almost always passes to the side that more strongly believes in its cause.
This brings us to this particular war over this particular constitutional amendment. As it stands, conservatives are doing nothing more than defending an existing arrangement. Progressives are out to change it. Let us not be deluded by any protestations that their agenda is to refine rather than eliminate the Second Amendment.

Exactly. I wouldn’t mind, however, that under the army and navy clause that the feds offer taxpayer paid training courses in basic marksmanship and military organization.
Yes, good point. Not just gun safety but marksmanship and tactics.
The Civilian Marksmanship Program was created so that we would have a youth educated in responsible firearms use in case we needed to call up the population for war. Its amazing that we have leaders in congress that believe that we will never be at war again or that we will always be able to win a war with barely 5% of the population conversant in how to function a rifle and the other 95% overweight.
I believe the “reason” most uninformed Americans will hold for banning bump stocks, if it is allowed to be enacted, is that it simulates full auto operation.
Because bump firing is possible with (all?) semi-auto firearms, that reasoning is a pathway to banning all semi-autos in the minds of the less informed citizenry.
This should not be allowed to occur.
The NRA claims to be a “single issue” organization to justify support of entrenched political factions (supporting Harry Reid and the establishment choice of Luther Strange for AL) when they are not in the best interests of the U.S. Citizenry. The NRA is selling us out when they fail to attack the NFA and turn back any attempt to weaken the 2nd Amendment. The NRA is allowing the insidious, factually deficient and emotionally driven arguments and the purveyors of those arguments to prevail.
Laws and SCOTUS decisions contrary to the clear statement in the 2nd Amendment are themselves unlawful. Such edicts should be treated as violations of the U.S. Constitution by all who have taken the Oath of office. The fact that ALL our governments use their (our?) assets to enforce such unconstitutional requirements demonstrates their lawlessness. U.S. Citizens have both the natural and legal rights in the U.S.A. to maintain the means to defend themselves at all times. Until we re-establish that right, enemies (both foreign and domestic) will be able to mass murder - however, whenever and wherever it suits their purposes and agenda. It seems they've been doing this all along.
This doesn't make the States infringing daily on our Rights in any way correct in their abuse of power. It just means we're putting up with the abuse instead of taking our Rights back...
"The prohibition is general. No clause in the Constitution could by any rule of construction be conceived to give to congress a power to disarm the people. Such a flagitious attempt could only be made under some general pretence by a state legislature. But if in any blind pursuit of inordinate power, either should attempt it, this amendment may be appealed to as a restraint on both."
Game. Set. Match.
Pull that Smokewagon....
The point that you don’t win by playing defense is important. Worth repeating.
Conservatives need to stay on offense.
2A is in zero danger of being repealed, ever. The danger is in liberal judges deciding not to enforce it.
