Hurricane Irma Live Thread
NHC/NOAA ^ | NHC/NOAA | NHC/NOAA

Posted on 09/04/2017 2:02:19 PM PDT by NautiNurse

While thoughts and prayers are with our Texas FRiends and neighbors, we are at the peak of the Atlantic Tropical Storm season. Hurricane Irma continues its trek from Cape Verde across the pond and toward the Hebert Box (see below). People with interests in the Southeastern U.S. and Gulf of Mexico should be alert to the forecast path updates for this powerful storm. It is important to note that the average NHC track errors are about 175 and 225 statute miles at days 4 and 5, respectively.

Hurricane Irma originally had a small wind field. In the past 24 hours, however, the wind field has expanded with hurriance force winds up to 40 miles from the center, and tropical storm force winds up to 140 miles from the storm center.

FL Governor Rick Scott reminds Floridians: Families should take time today to make sure you have a disaster plan and fully-stocked Disaster Supply Kit. Florida residents from West Palm Beach to Tampa Bay are heeding the alert. Store shelves are emptying of bottled water.

No, it’s not BS that certain gases are greenhouse gases.

Water vapor, methane, and CO2 are all greenhouse gases that absorb infrared radiation.

The BS part is just what role they play in *climate change* and the whole climate change hysteria itself.

And of course, the *climate change* stuff is BS anyways. It was a convenient catch phrase to use after the hysteria from the 80’s on that we were having global warming, nope global cooling, ooops global warming again, uh oh, global cooling again.

So to stop looking like the idiot alarmists they are by changing their opinion every few years based on a couple years of warmer than average or cooler than average WEATHER, they coined the phrase *climate change*.

That way, whatever happened, they could say they were right.

Wife’s aunt was evacuated during Charlie from a nursing home in Arcadia. The residents had to be moved by fire truck north to Lakeland when the roof started collapsing. Charlie spawned some large tornado’s at least one or two hit Arcadia.

Most of the nursing home residents died within a month due to the trauma of the storm/move. Wife’s aunt didn’t make it but a couple of days. We flew down for the funeral, and saw first hand the massive devastation and experienced living in a home for a couple of nights that was half collapsed. Power was still out for most of the town and heard all the stories of taking baths in ponds and neighborhood cooking of the freezer food.

Also heard the stories of price gouging for building materials - even though there was a law against it.

I feel like I'm some Democrat Underground site when I run into people like you on FR.

All you have done is call me names and immune my intelligence because I don't agree with your "feelings" today.

Not once, since your first response have you addressed my original comment except with personal attacks. I am not interested in your ad hominem attacks.

I come onto FR to read the news and share a thought once in a while. Not to start a fist fight with someone because I'm in a foul mood.

You, on the other hand, I am not so sure about.

I'm going to let you have the last word because I've just said mine. Hasta nunca.

the upper level conditions are just as important, if not more, important as the sea temps

right now..there is a high pressure(anti-cyclone) right over Irma..this is creating very low wind shear is is fanning the outflow out in all directions

its perfect..as is acting as an exhaust system

Thank you, NN. I’ve been waiting for this thread... mostly with a bit of concern. But we need to be informed.

The good news is that its path can change. The bad news, holy sh** if it don’t! Prayers up.

FL native here, plus stationed in NW FL for 12 years of my military career (did NOT request it). Relax, you'll do fine. The main thing to do is PLAN AHEAD. Beer is not a necessity, despite being one of the first things that sells out.

You know a storm is headed in your direction. It may not get there for a week, but PREPARE NOW. Fill up the planned getaway car with gas, then keep it topped up. Plan for 3-5 days with no power if you stay. Gas pumps won't be working - no power. Cell service will be jammed or down. Got a grill? Check the propane or charcoal. Got matches or a lighter? Flashlights? Batteries? Got your meds? Non-perishable food for the family? Don't forget the animals. Use up the perishables first, then crack open the freezer. Got something to keep you occupied? You won't be going to work, school, etc. Involve the ENTIRE family in the planning process, give everyone a job to do.

There is nothing more important than you and your family. Things can be replaced. If the authorities say It's time to go, then go. If you have to bug out, plan to stay gone for a week. Yes, the storm may only be there for a day or two, but local authorities need time to clean up and make it safe for you to return. Coordinate with other friends / neighbors to bug out together. Find a reliable source of news and stay informed.

The state of Florida has a LOT of experience with hurricanes - they WILL declare emergency early to get the FEMA ball rolling. Don't be shy about using help services (Sally Army,Red Cross, etc) if needed, that's why they're there. If you have to use a shelter, volunteer the family to help. It keeps you occupied.

After the storm, review what worked and what didn't, what you forgot and what not to take next time, and incorporate the info into your next plan.

Sorry for the delay in posting the thread. I’ve been trying to catch up my work in the short time since Harvey, and the storm is still a long distance away. I was waiting for Irma to get somewhere near a land mass. Nevertheless, we are here!

I heard from family they are already out of water at major store in SoFlo. I pray that all of the preparation is a total waste of time for everyone. I would hate to see another hurricane strike down there especially remembering Andrew and more recent Wilma which was a big disaster being so widespread.

Thanks. Not too worried. I lived down jersey shore when Sandy hit and worked in NYC on 911 so I’m shock tested. I
Think Watching Houston has everyone here on edge. Shelves clearing out already. We packed it in for a calmer lifestyle. LOL. My husband’s 90 year old mom is with us. Hopefully this thing loops back out to sea.
