The NFL between a Rock and a Hard Place
American Thinker ^ | August 30,2017 | Jeff Goodson

The Squeezing of the NFL

All of this puts the NFL between a rock and a hard place. Even before the 2017 pre-season is over, a Seventh-Day Adventist church in Alabama accused the NFL of racism and announced a pro football "blackout." Two sports bars in Chicago are also boycotting NFL games until Kaepernick gets a job, and the NAACP has threatened a similar boycott.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the TV set, fans are up in arms. In the wake of Cleveland's show of disrespect on August 21, social media lit up. A local VFW post in Strongsville, Ohio (Post #3345) announced that it would no longer show Cleveland Browns games, and Ohio Supreme Court justice Bill O'Neill announced a boycott of the Browns, calling the player protest an attack on the military.

At the end of the day, black players want social change, and fans want football without the anti-America politics. The NFL just wants the problem to go away. It remains to be seen how many teams will join the "disrespect America" protests in 2017, and how many fans will respond with their clickers instead of watching their favorite sport become a political football in America's new culture wars. It also remains to be seen how the NFL will stop hemorrhaging both viewers and advertising revenue.

There's a lot at stake, and it's not just money. One more season of this, and we'll have a better idea of whether professional football in America has crossed the Rubicon. And a better idea of where America's culture wars are heading.

Remember the baseball strike 94-95?? That’s where this NFL BS is headed. [...] It took years and years for baseball to recover. The Expos never did and ended up in DC....

Baseball eventually recovered by deciding to look the other way and letting players start abusing steroids like crazy, resulting in records being set all over the place. Generated a lot of interest but corrupted the history of the game. This option is not available to the NFL because they already look the other way while players abuse steroids and they already neutered the defenses via officiating to ensure records are getting broken left and right every year. So if the NFL takes a beating, they have no baked in "get well" emergency plan.

I think it will be outside in the parking lot. Antifa wants press coverage. A few brawls in the stands isn’t going to get media attention. I’ve been to NFL stadiums where there have been in fights in the stands and they don’t get on TV. There is only one news source at the game, and it’s the sports division of the network carrying the game. And a handful of Antifa fans scattered here and there in fights just looks like Steelers fans beating up on Raiders fans. Nothing to see here, move along.

But in the parking lot where the tailgates take place, ANY news organization can go. And the Antifas are pussies; they need numbers to get all uppity. In the parking lot, they can assemble in large numbers, and disrupt the tailgates. They can go to the public street outside the stadium and disrupt the fans trying to get in. In fact, that will be their preferred venue because they know the fans in that location will be disarmed since they are prepared to go through stadium security. Some fans will be liquored up and easily egged into a fight. And outside the stadium gates is where the news media will assemble.

You get the press coverage and it don’t cost nothin.

Did I just give them a battle plan?

One bit of ad hoc change to the uniform, and they fall on the player like a ton of bricks.

NFL rules about uniforms are just as strict as the rules about the game itself. Why? Because these meticulous rules are written into licensing contracts that the NFL signs with the companies that produce the equipment the players wear on the field.

If Nike is paying $X million per year to the NFL as part of a licensing/merchandising contract, then you can be damn sure that they're going to force the NFL to write very strict rules against any "ad hoc change to the uniform" by any of the players.

I’m surprised I haven’t seen reports of fights between pro- and anti-”sitting-during-the-anthem” fans. One of these days I expect to see an Antifa-type brawl in the stands.

The last few Tank McNamara comic strip had been running with that idea ...

Three fine examples of problems that could have easily been avoided by taking corrective action at the start:

If some sports bars in Chicago refuse to air the NFL games does anybody really give a $hit? The biggest losers in this mess will be the black community. There not too many whites in the NFL

“...One of these days I expect to see an Antifa-type brawl in the stands.

Have you seen the cost of an NFL ticket? No way the Antifa-types are going to pony up the cash....”

Not to worry. George Soros will foot the bill

I'm sorry but Colin K's employment woes have very little if anything to do with his politics.

He's just not that good. Only if some team's QB goes down with a season ending injury will Kaepernick get a sniff at a job in the NFL.

I’ll miss some of the games but I enjoy soccer even with its faults.

Yes. I too was an NFL fan. No more. I've been watching soccer now for the last month. I never thought I'd say this, but I'm really starting to get into it.

From now on at my house, Sunday is Premier League. Screw the NFL! Go Liverpool!

There are those on our NFL team (Eagles)who are part of this crap. The irony is that the local media and sports talk will not touch it but are in denial about why ratings are down. Rest assured the fan base can care less about the whole “issue”. We have a hundred yard flag, Military Color Guards,Vets always being honored and of course respect to the National Anthem. I think a good tactic is ignoring these imbeciles and if people want to stop watching, let that hurt the NFL bottom line. That is the ONLY thing they care about as football, incidentally,is losing favor in some schools. NJ is losing football teams to non participation.

The NFL just wants the problem to go away.

Then you should have stopped them at the dinner roll.

So many problems are caused by just letting things slide, taking the easy route.

And now you have a big problem.

My heart bleeds....

Wait, sorry... it was just some ketchup.

Yeah he’s done a bang up job. The NFL is now considered anti-American, it insults its fans, allows its overpaid players to lecture the fans and has feminized the whole league.

The owners have no one to blame but themselves. They continue to allow these overpaid punks to disrespect the flag and country and lose even more fans or keep a washed up little punk from being a total distraction from the team he plays on and piss off a small minority of radical black racist.

Way to go Goodell, you magnificent basta*d, genius!!!

Since my 11yr old plays flag football, he loves it. I was willing to give the NFL another chance this season and give me a reason to buy a bigger TV and entertainment system. Well that’s not going to happen. Trickle down works both ways.

They'll be two empty "sports" bars on Monday and Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons and evenings.

We're watching the sudden termination of a product life cycle, and the individuals involved would be fired in any other industry. Consider the incident where the Burger King dessert package had a swirl on it that looked like the word "Allah". Now, no one sane accused them of doing that deliberately, and no one questioned their right to put anything they wanted on their packages, but they changed it because it repelled the customer. It hurt the bottom line. Businesses spend incredible amounts of money on market research to find that sort of thing out.

The NFL knows there's a problem with the bottom line, the numbers are clear and unequivocal. Had the Burger King employees banded together and insisted that it was their company's right to put anything they like on their packaging, people would have thought them demented. Correct, perhaps, but crazy.

Certain NFL players have co-opted their brightly-lit stage toward political ends and have forgotten that they're all entertainers who must sell their product every game. The customer hasn't. And the business is sinking.

yes, and I replied to that specific comment because if we’re not to discuss other political and social issues on here unless they measure up to a natural disaster then ...

We’re discuss the politicization of the NFL by the left and how they responded and how if effects the over all league. It’s just an example of the exact thing we always discuss on here regarding the SJW/BLM pushing an agenda on businesses.

It doesn’t matter what some schlub in the stands is doing as they are not being paid to be on the field in a uniform representing a team.
