The Squeezing of the NFL
All of this puts the NFL between a rock and a hard place. Even before the 2017 pre-season is over, a Seventh-Day Adventist church in Alabama accused the NFL of racism and announced a pro football "blackout." Two sports bars in Chicago are also boycotting NFL games until Kaepernick gets a job, and the NAACP has threatened a similar boycott.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the TV set, fans are up in arms. In the wake of Cleveland's show of disrespect on August 21, social media lit up. A local VFW post in Strongsville, Ohio (Post #3345) announced that it would no longer show Cleveland Browns games, and Ohio Supreme Court justice Bill O'Neill announced a boycott of the Browns, calling the player protest an attack on the military.
At the end of the day, black players want social change, and fans want football without the anti-America politics. The NFL just wants the problem to go away. It remains to be seen how many teams will join the "disrespect America" protests in 2017, and how many fans will respond with their clickers instead of watching their favorite sport become a political football in America's new culture wars. It also remains to be seen how the NFL will stop hemorrhaging both viewers and advertising revenue.
There's a lot at stake, and it's not just money. One more season of this, and we'll have a better idea of whether professional football in America has crossed the Rubicon. And a better idea of where America's culture wars are heading.

Yeah, just last week some black woman announced that all white people should just give up their homes to a black person. Does the black person get to pay off the mortgage then? Or, do they think that a nice house is just freely given to a white person with no cost to the owner?
I just laughed, as hubby and I are working toward paying off our home before he retires; but, we should just hand over the house to someone else after we have worked to pay it off. Yeah, that sounds fair.
But for the money stolen from me to underwrite their damned stadiums and subsidizing their “salaries”...I’d shut down this kindergarten but quickly.
That idiotic month of wearing pink was a sure sign of PC gone overboard
Some years ago, I remember Rush Limbaugh talking about the NFL and saying that the SJW types were trying hard to get rid of football. As popular as football is, in this country, I didn't think he was right about that. Well, he was; but, I'm not sure even he would have believed that the players themselves would be the catalyst of their own demise. Idiots.
Patriotic Americans want one thing, and unpatriotic don’t-wanna-be-Americans want another thing.
The solution is simple. Completely offend and alienate one of the two groups.
Soon enough, some thug college player will start it to.
The filthy universities will probably go so far as to stop playing the anthem at college games to not offend.
I like soccer but the transfer fees for European soccer players make guaranteed sports contracts in the USA look cheap in comparison. It’s been said that the transfer fee for Cristiano Ronaldo to leave Real Madrid is 1 billion, or US$1.19 billion at current exchange rates.
Remember the baseball strike 94-95?? That’s where this NFL BS is headed. Owners will let players get away with their crap, fans will stop watching â next thing ya know, TV contracts go bust, stadiums are only half full....fans are tired of millionaire players shit. I’m a Saints fan. So far no Saints player is doing anything stupid on the sidelines during the Anthem. If one does, I’m out, done, screw NFL football It took years and years for baseball to recover. The Expos never did and ended up in DC....
I typed seven sentences and ONE mentioned Harvey. My main points were obviously about the NFL. If you don’t like how the NFL is operating, don’t watch. It’s just laughable that so many people are so invested in this nonsense. The NFL is entertainment. I go to NFL games. Do you have any idea how many idiots in the stands leave their hats on, remain seated, are drunkenly yelling during the anthem? It’s mayhem. So spare me this outrage about a few millionaires taking a knee.
They want a world in which any bullsh!t cocoction of their culture will be accepted and promoted unconditionally. Loved pro football. Hope, now, that they kill the goose and return to their levels of competence.
NASCAR also has a prayer (invocation) before the race, and a military fly-over, as well. They’re doing it right, so far.
With the advent of this display of anti-America sentiments from NFL idiot players, along with most owners who let this flourish, I decided to dispose of my cable TV.
As of yesterday, the cord is cut. Permanently.
The Adventists do their church goin’ on Saturday so its likely many of the male members will watch games on Sunday anyway.
Well stated. Most of the time when a major buffoon of an organization goes the wrong way, the idiots in charge will double down on their efforts.
Look for the NFL very soon to do something bizarre. Perhaps embed the BLM logo on every helmet? Mandate percentages of black minimum diversity standards, mandate female or LGBT players, STOP playing the national anthem in stadiums, ????
Something is going to happen, and I’ll bet it’s about 2-3 games into the season as ratings “mysteriously” fall.
One bit of ad hoc change to the uniform, and they fall on the player like a ton of bricks. Make a political statement on the field, not so much.
1: The NFL rigged the ratings this time by changing how they work. They will be doing some sort of composite rating which rolls in online watching which was never included before. Hence the ratings they report this year will be inflated compared to last year.
2: There is already a story being floated that the NFL could see decreased ratings because of Trump. So they cooked the books but are still doing pre-emptive damage control because they think the ratings will still be down.
The NFL has not only become boring but distasteful and offensive as well.
Goodbye and good riddance.
The Neymar trip to Paris is treading these paths as we speak. ;-)
The NFL has a lot of authority to micromanage details of the game on the field, but the teams still operate as their own companies and are subject to the rules of the league-wide collective bargaining agreement with the NFLPA.
I don't think the NFL deserves a lot of criticism for what it is doing on a league-wide basis here. The NFL simply doesn't have a lot of options right now. Individual team owners, on the other hand, can set the rules for the conduct of their own players, and some of them have done that.
The NFL really can't do very much here until the CBA expires and any requirements for the national anthem are written into it. This is exactly what happened when the NBA faced the same problem back in the 1990s.
