Four million people paid Affordable Care Act penalties averaging $708 for not having insurance in 2016, according to preliminary figures released by the Internal Revenue Service.
The average is just over the base penalty of $695 imposed for a whole year without coverage; those with higher incomes paid more. Overall, that's about $2.8 billion. The agency noted that those numbers are subject to change as processing continues.
The penalty started in 2014 with a base penalty of $95. The IRS reported that 7.9 million people paid an average of $210 that year, for a total of $1.6 billion.
In 2015 the base penalty rose to $325, and the IRS reported that 6.5 million people paid an average of $470, for a total of $3 billion.

$706 is chump change compared the cost of ObamaCare policies.
Why, it’s almost as if 0bamacare was DESIGNED to bilk more money out of the Middle Class, helping in its demise!
Imagine that! *SPIT*
Farmers paid not to grow crops; governments paid not to provide insurance...
There’s a pattern here.
That is tyranny....unconstitutional. Oh, forgot, Obama hates that document, only swore to protect it for show.
When you pay the Mafia to NOT HAVE A FIRE, you do not have a fire............................
How do you know if you have to pay a penalty...
Ive never had ObamaCare ever...
SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Well, let’s see...I can pay $708 penalty, or I can buy their crappy plan for three grand...hmmmm...
LOL, the media can now claim that under Obama the un insured went fro 35 million to 4 million. LOL
Yes but the fact they paid it means they’re not too smart. All kinds of ways to get out of it. The 8% exemption takes most people out. Forget to pay an electric bill and get a shut off notice? Bam! Exemption.
Overall, that’s about $2.8 billion.
Wow- someone made out like a liberal bandit
One of the first things President Trump did when he was inaugurated was issue an order to the IRS to have them accept any tax return that did not have the required Form 1095A included with it.
So if you paid a penalty for 2016, it's only because you told the IRS that you had no coverage for all or part of the year. If you said nothing, you would have paid no penalty.
I know that. I was saying it’s too easy to get out of even having a penalty that I don’t understand why anyone would.
The penalty is for not having health insurance.
"Ive never had ObamaCare ever..."
If you have health insurance then you have Obamacare.
IIRC the only way you can pay the penalty is to have a refund coming to you.
My sister paid extra to the IRS so she would have a big refund. It ended up being gobbled by Obamacare penalties.
Did that all go directly into ANTIFA’s operating fund?
Well, lets see...I can pay $708 penalty, or I can buy their crappy plan for three grand to 12 Grand!...hmmmm...
A lot of hard working and healthy single guys and gals are going for that option.
If they get sick, it is usually an acute and minor ailment, easily handled by a visit to a Doc in a Box. A generic RX can often be bought at Walmart for $10 or less. Even if it costs a couple of hundred and works, they are ahead of the game.
Excellent point. My wife and I did not pay a dime in penalties last year. Our tax lady said she was instructed to essentially look the other way...
“Overall, thats about $2.8 billion.
Wow- someone made out like a liberal bandit!”
Thanks for doing the math. Our people win again.
