NEW YORK (Reuters) - A majority of Americans think Confederate monuments should be preserved in public spaces, according to a Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll, a view that is at odds with efforts in many cities to remove them.
The Aug. 18-21 poll found that 54 percent of adults said Confederate monuments "should remain in all public spaces" while 27 percent said they "should be removed from all public spaces." Another 19 percent said they "don't know."
Responses to the poll were sharply split along racial and party lines, however, with whites and Republicans largely supportive of preservation. Democrats and minorities were more likely to support removal.
Cities across the United States are debating what to do with hundreds of statues, plaques and other monuments to the slave-holding Confederacy. Some monuments already have been removed this year in cities like New Orleans and Baltimore.

The period in American history known as reconstruction when blacks were given the vote (then restricted) gets the revisionist treatment or ignored because it doesn’t fit into the socialists agenda which calls for division. The reason those monuments in question are placed, honoring men who fought for their cause when after defeat did not continue on. But rather chose to accept and support the result to unuify the country
The last election cycle proved that the majority of voting American Citizens aren’t insane.

The reason for trying to erase the past is to get people mired in a miserable present while hiding from them the fact that their predecessors had better. Those who would keep people caught in a miserable present then make false promises of a better future in order to keep the people complacent and docile.
Of course we should keep the statues and monuments.
However, I am all for removing the party of slavery and racism and not allowing any member of that party to hold elected office ever again. In fact, I would fully support removing every member of that party from office now, for the good of the country. Not that that would happen.

Does anyone remember when Liberals ADORED public works of art that were "offensive" (Piss Christ, bloody scenes, shocking sex acts, etc), because the entire point of "great art" was to shock and offend and challenge beliefs and make people think? Why does this no longer apply to Confederate works of art?
Most Americans realize that the Confederacy was a very worthy cause and America would be better off if it had survived. It would have been a only a matter of time before the majority of states joined the Confederacy. The result would have been glorious.
The statues come down cause the whiny entitlement class always wins.
I don't believe that is true. I think most Americans believe the Confederacy was an evil organization that supported and fought for a great evil in the world. This is what most people are taught, and so this is what most people believe.
I think most Americans are glad it was defeated, but again, the reason they think this is because this is what they are taught in the schools, and this message is also heavily reinforced by books and media.

Now this I believe is true, and the possibility this would happen is one of the reasons why Washington DC considered the Confederacy to be a very great threat. There were other reasons why the Washington DC New England power cartel were afraid of the Confederacy, but this is certainly a strong reason why they couldn't leave the Confederates alone.

I don't know about that. I think Slavery would have continued for another 20-80 years or so, but on the positive side, both the Confederacy and the Union (if they did in fact remain separated) would likely have had far less obtrusive governments.
Not "glorious", but not necessarily horrible, either.
I’ll say it again: Surround the monuments with barbed wire. Then put a fence around it to hop over into the barbed wire. Preventive.
How about the Korean war memorial and Vietnam memorial wall in DC? Many leftists don’t like our cause in those wars either, but it would piss off one hell of lot of veterans to tear them down.
