SEATTLE - The Seattle City Council voted 8 to 0 to prohibit landlords from using criminal records to screen prospective tenants. The only exception to the new ordinance are sex offenders.
City leaders and supporters of the measure; 'Fair Chance Housing Ordinance' insist its goal is to reduce housing discrimination and barriers.
Inside Seattle Council Chambers there was overwhelming support for a measure.
In short, it will restrict how landlords can use arrest and conviction records to exclude prospective renters. Seattle landlords will no longer be able to ask about criminal records, pending charges, juvenile records or any arrest record when choosing tenants.
Council member Sally Bagshaw told KOMO News prior to the vote that she planned to vote yes because housing is an essential right to everyone and she hoped the measure will be an extra tool in the toolbox to help deal with the city's homeless crisis.

The Seattle City Council voted 8-0 to receive lawsuits.
I wonder if this extends to registered sex offenders. That would be a big issue with Apt complexes adjacent to schools. You’ve got to draw a line somewhere.
Plank #1 of the Communist Manifesto, the abolition of private property rights.
TFA has the answer to your question.
Back in the day it was called “block busting.” Buy a house next door to the mayor/council member and fill it with criminals. Take advantage of panicked selling by the neighbors.
Please let me win the lotto! $40 million or so should enable me to run a lot of libs out of their neighborhoods.
Believe it or not, Seattle's housing market favors sellers; Seattle based Amazon and Microsoft are in a hiring frenzy and folks are moving to Seattle in droves.
Most of the housing they're referring to are older large houses which have been converted into several apartments. New buyers will just remodel and turn them into primary residences, which, of course, will decrease the numbers of available housing.
Bkmrk
So now nobody will even rent to blacks period, why take the chance?
Glad to see they protect meth labs burgulars (popular in apartment buildings) and heroin dealers
"Yes, this is a better arrangement, comrades. More just."
Hint for landlords
1) charge 200 more than you want (in the paper)
2) tell them you want first, last, and sec deposit
3) you want references.
Any one who is willing to comply to those is usually OK- you can tell them it is really 200 less, and they are usually really happy. It just weeds out those who can barely afford it anyway
Meanwhile the rest of the police agencies in the state are using them as a deterrent to importing crime into their cities.
Does a government agency have the legal authority to do this?
What about queer landlords?
it will restrict how landlords can use arrest and conviction records to exclude prospective renters.
Where the hell does government get the right to micromanage private sector small businesses? It's just like the no-smoking in bars legislation...bakers forced to make cakes for faggots.
If these private entities are in fact "public accommodations"....then they should not be taxed, maybe even subsidized.
Probably. Maybe they got arrested for streaking back 1970s...
So arsonists, meth manufacturers and rapists are okay.
Scratch rapists when I saw sex offenders I usually equate that with child abuse.
This new ordinance doubles-down on landlord's rights.
Why don’t they just abolish private property while they’re at it?
The lawsuits that have emerged over this ordinance will be decided in court.
The Washington State supreme court is just as liberal as the 9th circus court.
