Southern Methodist University officials on Tuesday revised a policy that aimed to protect students from "harmful or triggering" messages after a dispute erupted over an annual 9/11 installation that students had planned for the heart of campus.
Nearly 3,000 flags have been placed on Southern Methodist University's Dallas Hall Lawn every year since 2010, but the group responsible for the display, Young Americans for Freedom, was recently told it must be moved.
University officials told Grant Wolf, who leads SMU's Young Americans chapter, that the display can be placed only on Morrison-McGinnis Park, a less prominent campus location informally known as MoMac Park.
In a policy posted in July, SMU stated that, "The University respects the right of all members of the SMU community to express their opinions. The University also respects the right of all members of the community to avoid messages that are triggering, harmful or harassing. It is the policy of the University to protect the exercise of these rights."
The university revised the policy Tuesday.
"SMU respects the rights of all campus community members to express their opinions, as well as their right to be free from coercion and harassment. The policy has been further updated to better reflect this balance and to remove the poor wording regarding triggering or harmful messages," it said in a prepared statement.

From now on, we may need to institute psychological testing of such candidates for elective office, to at least ensure that they have mastered the concept of “REALITY”!!! Otherwise, we may wind up with our own “Senator Kim Jong-Un”!
In their catelogue on the first page of introduction it states clearly that it was not a school of theology, it relied on science to educate students. I paid for 3 degrees, but i will not pay for another.
That is a powerful image! (....and I’m stealing it!)
This sickens me to no end...to think that our leftist colleges ARE getting away with “Forgetting” 9/11.
Where are the Judeo-Christian groups fighting this??
But, following the rules enforced by the left, if they accept even one penny of federal money either directly or indirectly through student aid, they have to follow a stack of federal regulations taller than the Empire State Building.
Just imagine if SMU decided to reduce the number of female sports scholarships to one less than the number of male scholarships they would have hundreds of lawyers suing based on Title IX. The only way to avoid these laws is to go the way of Hillsdale College.
I bet that there was a change in administrators at the university and the new person is an extreme liberal who has decided to impose this.
Just like their neighbor to the West, Texas “Christian” University.
I don’t think there is a federal law against a private school, or even a public school, from controlling political speech on campus.
A school can establish a free speech zone and they can also prohibit political speech.
Liberty University can prohibit a Pro Abortion group from demonstrating on campus and Reed College can prohibit a White Nationalist group from demonstrating on their campus.
We are not going to beat the Muslims.
Ever.
Private school...with public money.
The YAF students should unofficially arrange to have 3000 people stand on the lawn holding American Flags, and pictures of the Twin Towers in flames.
“Private school...with public money.”
Yes, but they are able to control speech and other displays of a political, social or religious displays on their campus.
I remember that day very well. jihadis declared war on the USA and Western Civilization. Again, they will lose.
SMU is a private college and has the total an unequivocal right to commit financial suicide. I would suggest to any and all alumni of this once prestigious college to not send them one damn dime.
And again I say it: Liberals will be the death of this nation.
One of these days, the muzzies are going to set off a nuclear or chemical weapon in this country and the lemmings are gonna freak out and wonder how it happened.
And then return to their idiot ways 0.00000035 seconds afterwards.
That severely limits the ability of public universities to limit free speech, or any other Constitutional protection incorporated against the states.
At my state university in the 1980’s the administration establish a Free Speech Zone with a times for free speech.
Lots of organizations joined in a priest of that policy and our protest was in the zone but outside of the established free speech times.
We were arrested, and when the university police hauled us down to be booked at county, the district attorney laughed at the university police and refused to to charge us.
A week later, the university changed their free speech policy.
