Southern Methodist University officials on Tuesday revised a policy that aimed to protect students from "harmful or triggering" messages after a dispute erupted over an annual 9/11 installation that students had planned for the heart of campus.
Nearly 3,000 flags have been placed on Southern Methodist University's Dallas Hall Lawn every year since 2010, but the group responsible for the display, Young Americans for Freedom, was recently told it must be moved.
University officials told Grant Wolf, who leads SMU's Young Americans chapter, that the display can be placed only on Morrison-McGinnis Park, a less prominent campus location informally known as MoMac Park.
In a policy posted in July, SMU stated that, "The University respects the right of all members of the SMU community to express their opinions. The University also respects the right of all members of the community to avoid messages that are triggering, harmful or harassing. It is the policy of the University to protect the exercise of these rights."
The university revised the policy Tuesday.
"SMU respects the rights of all campus community members to express their opinions, as well as their right to be free from coercion and harassment. The policy has been further updated to better reflect this balance and to remove the poor wording regarding triggering or harmful messages," it said in a prepared statement.

“Triggering”...I’d like to trigger the idiots running this school. What does this “trigger” in some? REALITY???
Gee, what was Roy’s horse’s name?????
So if they stop putting up flags, does this mean my friends didn’t die and I didn’t take a detour past the horrible wreckage for two years?
Is that what happens if you erase history?
Just wondering.
“The Young Americans and other student groups called the new policy an attack on free speech.”
SMU is a private school and it has the right to exercise controls on political, social and religious displays on campus.
However, the SMU administration does not appear to be exercising common sense on this issue.
It is astounding the number of ways the Left can describe censorship without using the word “censorship”.
Southern Methodist = Stalinist Mohammadan ?
Why do some people get more rights than others? They get the right to veto what others want that is neither offensive or harmful. We need to stand up against those who get the last word to nullify tradition.
More brainfree “educator” mini-me fascists. To think these nitwits are allowed anywhere near students...
I’ll bet that Southern Methodist University is not really southern Methodist all all, and leadership has been hijacked by others just as has Christian Science Monitor.
If it's a private school, doesn't it rely on the generosity of their alumni to keep some of the gravy train rolling there? A few moneyed alumni suddenly finding new places to donate and the administration might get the message.
If I were the "Young Americans for Freedom" group, I'd be making darned sure that these SMU alumni know of this new policy.
It’s supposed to be triggering. You’re supposed to cry a little.
YES
These are the same idiots that did this:
They cancelled the slain officer’s ceremonial first serve because they assumed he (and by extension his daughter) was white and would “trigger” people or “be insensitive to diversity.” Officer Michael Smith was born in Asia of Asian parents, was an immigrant and as such his daughter was half Asian and a first generation citizen. They only reinstated the invite after public shaming and someone pointed out that by “encouraging diversity” they had actually discriminated against someone with the “diversity credits” they claimed to be protecting. What a bunch of idiots.
Well ya know... removing the flags might “trigger” some other students.
Triggered by historical facts?
I bet these “officials” weren’t triggered by this SMU proof’s social justice piece....
Or this social justice presentation in Dallas Hall...
Or, this ‘gathering’...

This is happening at the campus that houses the GWBush Presidential Library.
It’s happening on campuses, all across the country.
Wake up, folks. Stop sending your hard earned $$ to these schools without fully vetting them/their policies.
“If it’s a private school, doesn’t it rely on the generosity of their alumni to keep some of the gravy train rolling there? “
I think we all know how far SMU alumni are willing to go to keep the Pony Express rolling.
Triggering the snowflakes’ melting.
The unnerving thing is that in 2020 the oldest Millenials will be old enough to run for the Presidency.
Who the he-double-hockey-sticks authorized such a despicable act! Our governor needs to step in and stop this outrage!
Texas Ping!
