Listening to Fox News, the gun the shooter used has been identified as an SKS with 7.62 X 39 ammo, with a scope, and called a "high powered rifle."
Of course an SKS is not high powered, or particularly accurate....but the ignorance, fear, and bias of the Media--even on Fox--is already coming out--to pound the drum against the 2nd Amendment.
At 50 yards which is approximately the range of todays nasty episode the projectile from a 7.62 x 39 has approximately 1292 foot pounds of energy. The projectile from a 30-06 Springfield has approximately 2664 foot pounds of energy at 50 yards. But at 50 yards both projectiles will make a big hole that will do a lot of damage.
7.62 x 39 is one of my favorite cartridges. It is a great cartridge to reload. I use a 160 grain homemade cast heat treated bullet with a recipe that produces approximately 2300 fps. A more powerful cartridge such as the 30-06 uses approximately the same weight projectile but propels it at over 3000 fps so you must use jacketed bullets.
“AK” style rifles are designed more for durability and dependability than accuracy. But the accuracy can be pretty good if you put a little extra effort into your reloads and your rifle.
Do some research and get back to me,You are wrong .
I own an AK47 and it is 7.62x39
“Is a 22lr with a hot load high powered? A 50BMG?”
What’ll they do when they find out about the horrendous 22 MAGNUM ?? /sarc
LOL! My daughter is prostitute in Khasikstan I am proud. LOL.
“The M40 is a bolt action rifle used by the USMC and is based on the Remington 700.”
I was just quoting the referenced article word for word.
Other news reports said it was an AK-47.
I don’t trust the media. I don’t believe anything they say.
Hard to believe there weren’t more and more serious injuries. Probably steel-jacketed Wolf rounds or some such.
I watched the video and with all of the shots he took, I was surprised- and thankful of course- that he didn’t hit more people.
I don’t know much about rifles, so thanks to all you gun deplorables for explaining things.
Not if he removed the fixed mag and used a duckbill magazine.
No variant of the AK-47 fires 7.62x54R. Mosin Nagant and the Dragunov SVD are the popular rifles that fire it.
I understand your point and agree completely. In this case the cartridge chosen made very little (if any) difference as compared to a cartridge with more case volume for more propellant but a similar sized projectile. The terminology chosen by the media is intended to push the left’s agenda against the second amendment. As compared to a handgun cartridge, any 30 caliber rifle cartridge such as 7.62x39 is “high powered”.
We own a BM-59 semi-auto which is basically a Garand that has been re-chambered to 7.62×51mm NATO and fitted with a 30 cartridge magazine. It is very fun to shoot, but how much more dangerous would it actually be in the hands of an idiot. Effectively, not much other than slightly more impressive noise that it makes.
So sorry to hear about your dad's Remington being stolen. My grandfather's entire collection of vintage rifles was stolen many years ago. I was devastated. We also knew for sure who took them, but couldn't do anything about it.
You are correct, they achieve similar velocities and energy when using similar weight projectiles. Even the slightly smaller .308 Winchester was designed for more modern propellant and achieves similar muzzle velocities:
.30-06 Remington is 7.62x57
.308 Winchester is 7.62x51
Russian special forces use a .22, the SV99, for sniping.
An older Soviet model was used with a plastic bottle silencer in the Balkans war.
A .22 will kill. As I understand it, it has no stopping power unless the target is multiple times. Get a 25 round clip and have fun.
I was surprised by the loudness of my single action .22 Heritage revolver.
