A 12-year-old Herkimer girl is still recovering a week after she was viciously attacked by two pit bulls as she waited for her school bus.
The incident happened on May 31, when the girl was with other children waiting at a bus stop on North Main Street in Herkimer, about 15 miles east of Utica.
According to Herkimer police, one of the dogs latched onto the victim's arm and violently flung her into the air and back down to the ground, breaking her ulna and radius bones and causing severe puncture wounds.
Herkimer firefighters treated the girl at the scene, and took her to the St. Elizabeth Campus of the Mohawk Valley Health System for emergency surgery. She will likely require additional surgery in the future, police said.
Police determined that at no time did the victim or the other children antagonize or approach the dogs.
They learned that the dogs' owner, Aaron Brown, 25, of Herkimer, did not have licenses for the pit bulls.
Brown was charged with Dangerous Dog, Unregistered Dog and Failure to Restrain under the Department of Agriculture and Markets. Police also charged him with misdemeanor reckless endangerment.
Brown voluntarily handed over the animals.
Brown also had an active arrest warrant in St. Johnsville for Criminal Trespass. He was arraigned in Herkimer Village Court and turned over to the St. Johnsville Police Department.

If people are unable to keep their dogs secured and leashed they should not have dogs. End of story. And if their unsecured dogs get loose and cause harm, sue the sh*t out of them and go for max prosecution.

I have a scar from a chihuahua. The owners made the mistake of bringing him to our farm later, and letting him out in front of our territorial black labrador. The chihuahua needed a lot of stitches.

Went for a run in a local canyon this morning. I see they’ve recently posted a sign requiring dogs to be on lease. Guess the county doesn’t want the liability.

No argument, here. Owning any large, powerful dog is a huge responsibility. And, there are laws in many places which allow for felony charges, should one’s large, powerful dog seriously maim or kill someone.
I just read of a case somewhere, where a 90 year old woman was killed by a pit returned to the rescue because it got aggressive with a 12 year old boy. That dog should never have been released by the rescue, I’d hold the rescue responsible for the old lady’s disembowlment. God rest her soul.

I’ve seen some pretty egregious stuff here the past several months with absolutely no retribution, even since the #neverTrumpers STFU. Must have been REALLY bad.

Many people cc everywhere in my area which imo makes it fairly civil here. So over Christmas a young man visited family with his pit. It got away from him and charged me and my dogs. He was across the street and diving on the dog in a nanosecond. I thought I was goingto kill it and had I been carrying, I would have.
But here is where physcotic dog meets stupid owner...the very next day he and his dad were playing with the dog off leash on the sidewalk. I screamed at them to put that f’ing dog on a leash. It’s only a matter of time with that one.

if a identified dangerous breed attacks a person, the owner should be charged with the crime designation. Example, if the dog kills someone the owner is charged with murder. You wouldn’t have to successfully prosecute but a handful of people before they took their responsibility seriously.
Herkimer is a nice town. It’s not particularly rich, but this isn’t a ghetto thing.
So it may not be “It’s not the dogs, it’s the owners” in this case, ya think ?
I live in Herkimer, this happened on N. Main St where mostly thugs, criminals, drug addicts,and sexual perverts live. Mostly white trash. Many have pit bulls as pets. They allow the dogs to defecate on the pavement and do not bother to clean it up. The person responsible left the 2 pit bulls unleashed on the street, where they attacked the kids. He was also wanted in another village for a crime.
