When uploaded to Netflix, an episode of the educational children's show "Bill Nye the Science Guy" cut out a segment saying that chromosomes determine one's gender.
In the original episode, titled "Probability," a young woman told viewers, "I'm a girl. Could have just as easily been a boy, though, because the probability of becoming a girl is always 1 in 2."
"See, inside each of our cells are these things called chromosomes, and they control whether we become a boy or a girl, " the young woman continued. "See, there are only two possibilities: XX, a girl, or XY, a boy."
But in the version of the episode uploaded to Netflix, the segment has been cut entirely. While noncontroversial at the time, the 1996 segment appears to contradict Netflix's new series "Bill Nye Saves the World."
The new show endorses a socially liberal understanding of gender, under which gender is defined by self-identification rather than genetics and there are more than just the two traditional genders.
It is not clear whether the 1996 segment was cut when it was first uploaded, or whether the edit was in reaction to recent controversies over Bill Nye's stance on gender identity.
Bill Nye the Fake Science guy!
Thank you for your much-needed clarification. I have said the same since...forever, it seems.
Now if we could just get the left to stop misusing the word “fascist”.
Netflix’s new series: “Bill Nye Helps Corrupt and Destroy the World.”
Not to mention that our beloved Nation is a REPUBLIC, and emphatically NOT A DEMOCRACY.
(Yes, it has elements of a democracy, but at its heart, by careful design, it is a republic.)
If I had a nickel for every time some misguided soul blathered on about how America is a democracy, ... well, I'd have a big pile of nickels, anyway.
Completely unrelated to the topic, but I’ve seen those two photos for years but now I’m looking at the strange “halo” around the guy, and it sure looks like he was added to an original photo rather than subtracted from it. Weird.
Anyway, carry on. :)
“...XX, a girl, or XY, a boy.”
...and then there’s KY, but that’s another issue entirely.
Great post!
I was about to compose something along the same lines — but, I will just ditto what you said.
I’m an EE & I’m pretty sure that “gender” is defined by external characteristics... The electrical connector with the contacts that stick out are male connectors, the receptacles they plug into are female.
Not a social construct.
#CromosomesMatter
I've worked as an electrical and computer engineer most of my 65 years (despite having a BS in Physics, not EE), and while part of what you say is true (we do use "gender" to describe the male and female connectors), that's because decades ago, if we had used the proper term -- "sex" -- not one of us would have been able to keep a straight face. You practically couldn't say "sex" in polite business company back then. "Gender" was substituted for "sex" in a bow to the gentler sensibilities of those times.
Assuming you have worked in the field as long as I have (since the late 60's) or earlier, and remember what the industry was like in those times, you know what I'm saying is true.

You’ve been at this a bit longer than I have, and for that, you have my deepest respect.
With eggheads, nothing ever changes... We’re still basically just 12 year old boys who blush at the word “sex” and think farting is hilarious in certain contexts.
I’m in complete agreement that in the terminology of connectors, that sex and gender serve as convenient synonyms; and for the very reasons you state.
The issue, as I see it, is the willful attempt by those with an agenda, to eradicate this secondary meaning of the term for political gain.
Merriam-Webster defines gender, first as a linguistic determinant, and secondly as - sex:
“a : sex the feminine gender
b : the behavioral, cultural, or psychological traits
typically associated with one sex”
My sister is a biologist, and her definition is solidly conservative as well. Sex (genetic) determines gender (Physical traits).
My daughter the Psychologist sees differences, but can’t really define them. For her, it’s all mental / emotional.
Like you said in your previous post: “If you let your opponent define the terminology of the argument, YOU HAVE ALREADY LOST.”
Ain't it the truth :-) As we get older, we don't blush as much at "sex", but the farting becomes more of a warning.
"Never trust a fart."
DNA does not determine gender... it determines SEX.
Gender is a grammar point in Latin based languages

He has always creeped me out, he’s definately giving off creeeper vibes. HOWEVER, one must look into his past to discover he was not a scientist.
A full transformation from female to male, or male to female, is impossible. The only “transgender change possible is from male to neuter, or female to neuter, surgery and hormones be damned. Even if no surgery or hormone treatment is applied, the “transgender” is in fact but a transvestite, so long as the “junk” remains intact. Everything else is cosplay.
XX does not equal XY, nor does XY ever equal XX.
The rewriting of Title IX changes nothing, but does introduce error into the law.
