When uploaded to Netflix, an episode of the educational children's show "Bill Nye the Science Guy" cut out a segment saying that chromosomes determine one's gender.
In the original episode, titled "Probability," a young woman told viewers, "I'm a girl. Could have just as easily been a boy, though, because the probability of becoming a girl is always 1 in 2."
"See, inside each of our cells are these things called chromosomes, and they control whether we become a boy or a girl, " the young woman continued. "See, there are only two possibilities: XX, a girl, or XY, a boy."
But in the version of the episode uploaded to Netflix, the segment has been cut entirely. While noncontroversial at the time, the 1996 segment appears to contradict Netflix's new series "Bill Nye Saves the World."
The new show endorses a socially liberal understanding of gender, under which gender is defined by self-identification rather than genetics and there are more than just the two traditional genders.
It is not clear whether the 1996 segment was cut when it was first uploaded, or whether the edit was in reaction to recent controversies over Bill Nye's stance on gender identity.
Bill Nye, the Science-Denier Guy.
Anyone who doesn’t get this flunks Genetics 101.
Mr. Smith—Mr. Winston Smith—Your presence is required in the Ministry of Truth.
The term “gender identity” was created to describe the concept of what gender one identifies as. The attempt to now claim the word “gender” has always meant the same as the more recent term “gender identity” is ludicrous, non-historical, and a brazen attempt to set up an agenda driven equivocation between the two distinct concepts that reminds me of the “NewSpeak” I have heard about in the 1984 novel (disclaimer I’ve never read it, know it only by reputation).
Kyle XY. Supposed to have been the ultimate unprogrammed personality to have been played on TV. No gender-specific behaviors, just full-blown a physiologically mature individual with no stereotypes imprinted.
The psychological implications were astonishing.
Apparently unlike the weather 100 years from now, the science of chromosomes determining sex wasn’t settled.
BTT, good one.
Canel and fire Bill Nye, bacause all he’s done of late is “Lye”!
At least here in Canada, the reviews are just terrible (the ones listed on the Netflix site).
The Soviets let the Nuke Scientists alone to be real Scientists.
Can you imagine the not so distant future where Steve is running the FBI?
Is that really so much of a mental stretch?
Doesn't make any difference. The young woman, who, I guess, isn't so young anymore, the episode being 20 years old, told the truth. You're an XX or an XY. Thus far, God has been generous and blocked attempts by scientists to change our basic genes.
I pray His generosity continues.
Nexflix pisses me off. If the woman's idea had been supplanted by changes in basic science, I could see editing the episode. But they edited it only to "comply" with unsound genetic understanding.
anti-science.
"SEX" has to do with your "Male/Female" stuff, including your chromosomes.
"GENDER" has to do with language, and some other things, but not biology or genetics.
Chromosomes determine your SEX. The girl in the segment said neither "SEX" nor "GENDER" (according to the quote above). But she got it right about the chromosomes determining whether she would be a girl or a boy.
Chromosomes have nothing to do with "GENDER", which is a construct for assigning "masculine", "feminine", "neuter", etc. There is nothing unusual (in non-English langauges which have gendered nouns) with something like "manliness" being a noun of feminine gender, for example.
C'mon people, help these poor idiots get it right. The girl was correct. Bill Nye is wrong. But you're not helping win the case for us, by letting them get away with conflating "sex" and "gender".
Much as it annoys me, "gender" has come to mean d@mn near anything. But "sex" is the one we need to hammer into their pointy little heads. Rare mutations aside, your "sex" can only be either male or female, and it's determined by your chromosomes.
Like the man said, "If you let your opponent define the terminology of the argument, YOU HAVE ALREADY LOST."
Bill Nye, The Science Lie.
Males have XY chromosomes.
Females have XX chromosomes.
Period.
Full stop.
End of story.
For a society that somehow thinks of itself as educated and scientific, we sure have found a way to pervert PERCEPTION over REALITY.
the state of “science” in our nation is now politicized every bit as much as the old Soviet Union, where basic facts
that are undesirable to the Progs in the media and government schools are now distorted, lied about and omitted.
