Writhing and gasping: AP reporters view problem executions

The sedative midazolam is supposed to prevent condemned prisoners from suffering while they die, but opponents say several problematic executions involving the drug are evidence that it does not work consistently. They raised new concerns after an execution Thursday in Arkansas left the prisoner convulsing and pressing against his restraints.

actually - laws (and Supreme Court decisions) have validated as still legal:

Lethal injection
firing squad
hanging
gas chamber

in context, “cruel and unusual” was more of a prohibition against punishment that was way over-the-top for the crime committed. AKA - chopping off hands for a common thief. Basically - means of torture were not considered appropriate.

But they never envisioned a pain-free exit as the requirement.

Why don’t we just go back to the tried and true methods of hanging and firing squad?

I don’t know.

I have been to the putting down of 7 dogs and 1 cat.

One of them was not mine, but someone else who asked me to go because they could not bear it, so I did.

In each case, the dogs and 1 cat appeared to go very peacefully.

They just sort of faded away.

I know this because I looked into their faces and eyes each time as instructed by the vet.

They didn’t suffer, but I did.

That’s a tough, tough thing.

Wonder if any of them are at a live baby abortion where the abortionist kills the baby.

How did the condemned man’s victim die? Likely a lot worse.

Seriously, put them under as if they’re having surgery...then you can do whatever you have to and they won’t feel a thing.

Writhing, gasping, convulsions are all known side effects of that drug. It’s not necessarily an indicator of pain. People are put to sleep every day for surgery. There are tons of concoctions for knocking out a horse. I honestly don’t see a problem here.

I once asked about why gunshot was eliminated and was told that there can be long term negative effects on those who do the shooting, and if the prisoner moves, the shot can miss. We’ll, long term effects can be a problem over the long term with any method administered.

A firing squad can be automated so that no human is involved, and can be set for spread and style of ammo used.

I have little to no sympathy for the condemned facing a death sentence. Very few people are executed in the first place, while those who are so condemned, are most often the worst of the worst. Finally, such a very long time elapses between the day of issuing the sentence and actually carrying it out, that there is more than ample time to turn the sentence around if indeed he/she is guilty of a lesser offense, or even innocent.

If doubts truly exist about guilt, then the person doesn’t even belong in prison. Prison is cruel and unusual punishment all by itself when an innocent person is incarcerated.

I would never want an innocent person unjustly punished at any level. But when a person has been justifiably condemned to death, then society is cleansed when such a one is served his sentence.

The deterrent isn’t for society at large. The deterrence is valid because it prevents that guilty one from ever harming another, ever again.

What about the “writhing and gasping” of the people these animals killed?

Serious question: What’s the objection to a gas chamber that fills up with carbon monoxide instead of the fancy stuff? That “works” in any number of painfully hard to read articles about faulty kerosene heaters every winter. I’m of the understanding that you just kinda fall asleep and quietly and painlessly snuff it.

I’d just as soon it was slow, painful and terrifying.

Just turn the friends and family of the victims loose on them. That would be justice.
