Secretary of State Rex Tillerson asked European diplomats during a Tuesday meeting why American taxpayers should care about Ukraine, according to a Bloomberg Politics report.

“Why should U.S. taxpayers be interested in Ukraine?” Tillerson asked the foreign ministers, known as the “Group of Seven," during what Bloomberg said was an offhand remark at meetings in Lucca, Italy.

Gotta love it. This is the Trump administration saying “what’s in it for the U.S”.

Setting the NATO funding issues aside, why does the alliance require US interest in an issue for that issue to be addressed? That doesn’t sound like much of an “alliance” to me. It sounds entirely one sided. I’m all for America first, but why even pretend we’re in an alliance, especially when we’re still paying the lion’s share of the bills?

alliance: A close association of nations or other groups, formed to advance common interests or causes.

Note: a “common” interest—not US only interests.

Obviously taken out of context. He’s asking a question that he knows the answer to. This is how the head of a major corporation thinks. He asks, let’s ask ourselves why?

It seems like Ukraine, Russia, Europe all have common ground. I would think it’s peace, security, prosperity and the pursuit of happiness. So, why can’t we achieve this?

It’s a response to be expected. Non committal and asking why?

Ukraine has always been Russia and Russia has always been Ukraine. Russia and the Ukraine established the Soviet Union and built the Warsaw pact. I view Russia and Ukraine to be at Civil war and the United states should not get involved.

All this Putin aggression started when Ukraine’s name was floated around as a new nato member.

The political situation in Ukraine is very complicated, and there are indeed radical nationalists who would love to provoke a war and drag us into it.

Agreed. A stupid and embarrassing comment IMO.

“WE” cannot achieve peace security or prosperity for Ukraine, Russia and Europe. That is their issue and “we” have no dog in this fight.

The faster we are out of NATO the better.

That is an excellent question, and should be asked whenever the US is contemplating taking action somewhere. Especially if we are footing the bill. Once an answer is obtained, the next question should be, “What is the envisioned end state of our action there?”

To my knowledge, the first question was never asked before we went into Kosovo. Or before Obama and Hillary completely destabilized the Middle East. (Or before the Democrats completely botched the campaign in Vietnam.) The second question was certainly never contemplated, either.

Because we promised to support their independence if they gave up their nuclear weapons. As did Russia.

Do you want us involved in the Ukraine? It is in Europe’s backyard, it is their problem. Why do they continually look to us and then stab us in the back at every turn? Tillerson, with his question, reminded these Euroweenies that they take, take, take without any thought of the American taxpayer who pays for everything.

The EU should be helping Israel to build that trans-Med pipeline instead of attacking Israel to sooth their refugee overlords.

The reference quote above reminds me of this essay posted at the Gates of Vienna blog earlier this week:
