Dozens of U.S. Missiles Hit Air Base in Syria
New York Times ^ | April 6, 2017 | MICHAEL R. GORDON, HELENE COOPER and MICHAEL D. SHEAR

President Trump said Thursday night that the United States had carried out a missile strike in Syria on Thursday night in response to the Syrian government’s chemical weapons attack this week that killed more than 80 civilians.

A senior military official said that 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles had hit Al Shayrat airfield in Syria. The missiles were aimed at Syrian fighter jets and other infrastructure but did not target anything that may have had chemical weapons.

He said that no Russian planes were at the airfield and that the cruise missiles did not target any Russian facilities.

The motive was to give Obama some space assuring the American people that the magic president solved everything. Now that Trump is in power, Assad plays his cards and saddles Trump.

All along Trump with Russia was a fake, it was Obama pretending to hate Assad who was fully in bed with deep Soviet State, turning American intel into Stasi.

Trump is in a hard corner.

Right or wrong on the attack, I don't understand 59 Tomahawks for one airbase. Seems like about 5-8 are enough to take out an airbase.

How would the above-listed “choices” that Trump has ostensibly imposed upon Russia benefit the U.S. in any way?

I agree with the other posters that this is a major mistake. The president has no authority to declare war, and what else can this be but a declaration of war against Syria? Whether Syria is responsible for the chemical attack or not, there should be—and constitutionally are—greater limits on what a president can and cannot do with US military forces. We are not supposed to be Team America World Police.

Check your history.

The US has done dozens of wars w/o congressional approval.

I don't need to, I know that, and it doesn't alter my point.

False flag?

Syria used planes in two waves, if the US is to be believed. The base we just attacked was the base the planes flew out of.

And my guess, is that if the US is lying about the Syrian planes flying, that other nations would be calling us out on it.

When it involves Syrians planes, I don’t see how it could be a false flag.

It might have been a Syrian test of US resolve. It might have even been a Russian test of US resolve. But it wasn’t wasn’t ISIS, or the US, or anyone else flying those Syrian planes.

Where in the kcuF do we get off intervening in a their Civil War?

Like many civil wars, it quickly became a proxy war. Age-old divisions between Sunni, Shia and Alawite were ignited for the sake of oil politics and pipelines, Saudi Arabian power and religious dominance, and a strategic conflict between Russia, and the United States.

I surely wished indeed our moves were more domestic such as beefing up our nuke deterence and letting the American people build a defensive militia and private and public civil defense shelters. That would really pi$$ our enemies and they would do damage abroad themselves for nothing.

Hiwever Trump is in a presidentiality hard corner after Assad plaid bad guy but supported Obama by assuring Kerry all chems had been removed.

How can this be?

The Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) is an arms control treaty which outlaws the production, stockpiling, and use of chemical weapons and their precursors.

As of October 2016, 67,098 of 72,524 (93%) metric tonnes of chemical agent have been verifiably destroyed. More than 57% (4.97 million) of chemical munitions and containers have been destroyed.[7]

Five State Parties, namely Albania, an unspecified state party (widely believed to be South Korea), India, Libya, and Syria, have completed the destruction of their stockpiles. Russia and the United States, which declared the largest amounts of chemical weapons, are in the process of destruction.[17] The deadline set for both countries of April 2012, however, was not met.

Trump can bypass international authorization by claiming human rights violations (it’s basically an extension of self defense claim for humanity). Trump can use the 1973 war powers resolution to bypass congress.

I know that, and it doesn't alter my point.
