So, what changed your mind about Trump? (vanity)
March 24, 2017

Posted on 03/24/2017 4:32:05 PM PDT by EveningStar

Some of us, forum posters, conservative columnists, and commentators, were not thrilled with having Donald J. Trump as the GOP nominee. We thought his statements were reckless and stupid. And we didn't trust him or believe him when he talked conservative principles. After all, he'd changed parties several times over the years.

When the election came around, some people supposedly on our side actually voted for Hillary. I couldn't do that, of course. I couldn't vote for any Democrat. I thought of voting for Gary Johnson. He said he believed in a strong military. But then he said that he wanted to cut the military budget.  No thanks. And this didn't even take into account his "What's Aleppo" gaffe. But I couldn't vote for Trump either. So, for the very first time ever, I didn't cast a vote for President, and I'd been voting in Presidential elections since 1968 when I was first eligible to do so, always for the Republican candidate. I figured that no matter who won, the country was screwed.

So, what changed your mind about Trump?

I was wrong about Trump.

Now, I wasn't a Bushbot and I'm not going to be a Trumpbot. For instance, I wasn't thrilled with Dubya's domestic policy. He couldn't find his veto pen during his first term (I don't see President Trump having the same problem, but we'll see), but I really liked Dubya. Likewise, I doubt that I will agree with everything President Trump does and says (his tweets and statements at rallies sometimes make me cringe). Does that make me a traitor, fair weather friend, troll, concern troll, sleeper troll, RINO, Democrat, etc? No, it just means that, "Mr. President, I disagree with you on this, but overall, I think your doing a good job." I'm not a cultist. Cults are for the Left. Let them worship the Kennedys, Mao, Castro, Clinton, Obama, et al. Conservatives should not be cultists

I want a President's policies to keep us free, safe, and prosperous. It certainly looks like President Trump is well on the right track.

In the mean time, I'm hungry. I need something to eat:

...for the very first time ever, I didn’t cast a vote for President...

So you voted for McCain and Romney but not Trump?

I was for Trump since about August 2015 (first rally I attended: September 2015).

I switched when I realized the country needed a businessman.

Also, I realized that if you took away all that charisma, and took away about $10 billion . . . he is just like me! :)

No...I won't give you the chance to go running to JR, the Mods...whomever, and report me until I get a time out, at the least.

Imagine the worst and then multiply it by many trillions of times and you still won't be able to know what I am thinking. ;^)

The TEA Party was very active in getting this healthcare bill shut down. I got two calls from them asking me to contact my rep.

The ultra fiscally conservatives really did not want this version of a healthcare bill to pass. I guess they figured it just didn’t get the government out of our personal lives enough. I’m guess they were correct. I don’t know why a full repeal with a phased shut down of the ACA could not be done. Then the pressure to build something market-centric could be made available with the gov out of our personal lives.

I have great deal of respect for that end of the Party so I believe they saw something in it that wasn’t acceptable. I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt. We have seen the establishment wing of the party far too aligned with the left when they shouldn’t be to the point they earned the nickname “Uni-Party”.

I was a Cruz supporter, but got on the Trump train when Cruz messed up by criticizing Trump for liberal violence at Trump rallies. Then Cruz did other dumb things (still second best, but they established a pattern and not just a one-off fluke to put him behind President Trump). I still like Cruz for Supreme Court, but Trump was by far the best choice for the White House.

I might add, that I had never been a “fan” of his. Never watched an episode of his TV series, The Apprentice. In fact, prior to that escalator ride and his subsequent speech, I viewed him as a rather interesting, humorous and highly opinionated “New Yorker.”

This was me as well. I simply liked his straight from the hip talking points about illegal immigration and securing the borders; the single biggest threat to the USA today. There are others but that one is the biggest. He had me right then as a supporter.

I always liked Trump from his announcement of candidacy, but I initially backed Walker, though I completely expected the GOP to nominate a dull, unimaginative candidate and Hillary to sail to two very dominant terms as president.

When Walker dropped, I was very alienated by his bitter comments directed at Trump. It became very clear to me that GOP Inc was attacking Trump more intently than they ever attacked a Democrat.

That sealed it for me. I’m nominally a Republican but will leave the GOP once Trump is out of the picture.

Winners and successful people didn't get that way by winning all the time or being successful at everything they do. Success or winning is not usually a straight line. It has its ups and downs.

The road to success and winning is forged in losses to learn from.

People who are successful learn to get back in the saddle right away and forge ahead towards their goals. Most people give up when they fail. Winners don't. They keep trying until they succeed.

When I was in sales in the mortgage banking business, we used to say that a yes would come only after getting many doors slammed in our faces. Failure and losing are a big part of winning and success.

Trump is a winner. He will move on and tackle tax reform and then come back to a ObamaCare fix down the road.

It is hard to form an opinion without the wisdom of all the actors and talk show hosts. We have a lot of data to search through.(/s)

Try to recollect ALL of the things you said to me during the primary and election seasons.

Then Try to remember ALL of the other times you have been damned dead wrong and we have had other set-tos. ;^)

Yes, but your post is excellent.

You may be mad at me, but my comments are not seriously directed at you.

I for one know that you could not be a wimp and an ongoing thoughtful FReeper at the same time.

As far as the spinach, weight-lifting, and laxative comments, yes, perhaps they were hyperbolic and over-the-top, but hey, I mean them to be sincere advice and extend to you my hope for a salubrious lifestyle and regular bowel function.

Like I said, I’m no political genius so I don’t know what really happened.

Sounds like there were too many RINOs or too few conservatives. Same thing, I guess.

Maybe blaming the dems will put pressure on them to move a little more to the center on this.

I liked Trump but was on the fence leaning Cruz. Then the March Trump rally got shut down by the Chicago Bernie/socialists. Instead of defending free speech, I had to watch Cruz on all the local lib news blaming the shutdown on Trump. I got on the Trump train. Didn’t think he would win till I took a road trip the end of October. There were Trump signs everywhere once I left Crook County. I support him totally and think he is doing an amazing job.

My husband’s job said this week they will no longer be hiring H1-B visa workers.

This election has already made my life happier.
