Aurora Animal Control claims longtime family dog is wolf hybrid, won’t return him to owners

The family's veterinarian also says the same thing. But Aurora Animal Control thinks Capone is a wolf-hybrid.

"It's been real painful," 11-year-old Ciara Abbato said.

"Our German shepherd, Capone, got out Feb. 24. He jumped the fence. It’s the first time in the seven years we’ve lived here," said Capone’s owner, Tracy Abbato.

Aurora Animal Control picked up Capone that day, but turned away his family when they tried taking him home.

"They say he is a hybrid-wolf now and don't want to release (him) back to us because he is an exotic animal,” Abbato said.

The city ran a DNA test to determine his breed on March 1 and if the results prove he's a wolf-hybrid, the family dog could be put down.

Animal control said based on Capone's mannerisms, behavior and physical characteristics, they suspect he is part wolf.

"I am 100 percent confident he is not a wolf, not a doubt in my mind," Abbato said.

But while they await the test results, Capone sits in the Aurora Animal Shelter, away from his family and his two buddies who've grown up together from puppies.

"It's hard for me. It's hard for my kids. He's a family member. We've had him for almost 10 years. We miss him," Abbato said.

Who paid for the DNA testing that determined that he is a wolf-hybrid? It is the only way to be sure.

If the results show it is related, then the family should insist on the results from all of the German Shepherds that have been picked up in that jurisdiction.

Some animal shelters come into the control of animal rights nuts. They usually try to find any reason to euthanize animals.

That's true. The hard left hates the idea of domesticated animals. Pets and livestock. And babies too, for that matter.

They usually aren’t guarded at night. Plan and execute a quick rescue raid, all in hoodies and gloves. Vanish the dog from the jurisdiction.
When they come accuse you, act indignant. Pull a nose hair to make a tear. Say they didn’t protect your dog from a kidnapping!

All dogs have wolf dna, just like all cats have feline dna.

Our Australian cattle dog who died at 16 1/2 was definitely part dingo. He was also 1/4 border collie. But the dingo showed up at random times. It took us heavy duty training for two years to help him get over his fear of small children. He learned however that they (the children) can be trained to throw frisbees. We now have a cat that is part desert lynx. He’s a bit wild too... very stupid but wild.

The test will tell.

The owners should fund their own test, just in case.

I went to a wolfdog (hybrid) Sanctuary in Alberta, Canada.

They said that the great majority of Wolf-dog hybrids just aren’t. A lot of people claim they are, to sell the pups. Shepherds and Husky/Malamutes look the most like wolves to the layman, but real wolves are very different from dogs, and very unlikely to interbreed. Territorial wolf packs drive off or kill dogs, and only the packs alpha female is allowed to mate.

They are very unlikely to make good pets either - very standoffish, no belly rubs, very possessive of things.

Wolves blow the doors off dogs in physical terms, with much greater endurance, bite strength, cold hardiness and immune resistance.

This dog does not look like a wolf hybrid to me. His ears are more pointed, and larger, relative to his head, like a dog. The inner corners of his eyes are inward like a dog, rather than angled down like a wolf. His tail has an upward curve - wolves never do. His front legs are wide apart like a dog (wide chested), wolves front legs can be held together when standing. The length of the legs and the size of the feet are more doglike (shorter/smaller) than wolflike. Wolves never bark, so that is a behavior they could check.

He sure looks like a shepherd to me. Having lived in a house for ten years makes it unlikely that there is much or any wolf in him.

Multiple states have laws against private ownership of wolves and wolf hybrids because of the event of them reverting to their feral tendencies. Many wolves and hybrids in the past have been vicious and resulted in dog attacks against humans that were severe in nature. Tennessee has laws against the ownership of wolves and hybrids without a proper wildlife permit and rules of keeping them. Mississippi doesn’t enforce any laws they make concerning animals so its not a problem here.
