The family's veterinarian also says the same thing. But Aurora Animal Control thinks Capone is a wolf-hybrid.
"It's been real painful," 11-year-old Ciara Abbato said.
"Our German shepherd, Capone, got out Feb. 24. He jumped the fence. Its the first time in the seven years weve lived here," said Capones owner, Tracy Abbato.
Aurora Animal Control picked up Capone that day, but turned away his family when they tried taking him home.
"They say he is a hybrid-wolf now and don't want to release (him) back to us because he is an exotic animal, Abbato said.
The city ran a DNA test to determine his breed on March 1 and if the results prove he's a wolf-hybrid, the family dog could be put down.
Animal control said based on Capone's mannerisms, behavior and physical characteristics, they suspect he is part wolf.
"I am 100 percent confident he is not a wolf, not a doubt in my mind," Abbato said.
But while they await the test results, Capone sits in the Aurora Animal Shelter, away from his family and his two buddies who've grown up together from puppies.
"It's hard for me. It's hard for my kids. He's a family member. We've had him for almost 10 years. We miss him," Abbato said.

Um...aren’t dogs descended from wolves...our lab aussie mix could act wolf like at times...What idiots.
All dogs are Hybrid Wolves
Animal Control Officers at least here in VA are full-fledged
LEOs. You don’t want to mess with them.
Morons.
They actually ran a DNA test to find out the animal was related to wild animals at some point.
You can’t make this stuff up folks. IDIOTS!
Once I saw that this happened in the Denver metro area it made all the sense in the world. That place (and most of the front range area) is like F. Scott Fitzgerald in Ted 2!
This is so wrong. I had a wolf hybrid many years ago. They are very loyal animals.
I worked with a guy that had a wolf/german shepherd mix.
The dog was a BAD dog, downright evil.
Of course, so was the guy I worked with. I do not blame the dog for his actions, rather the owner.
This is a story I hope works out well for the owners.
That dog was sold to the family as a German Shepard by the same government Animal Control that now wants to take it away.
The Animal Control should be sued for fraud and endangerment if they refuse to return the dog to it’s family
There is no evidence of the dog being aggressive or a danger
They should demand to get their own DNA test.
Don’t trust the government to tell the truth about theirs.
Every dog on this planet is a WOLF!
Chihuahuas to Great Danes, ALL came from wolves!................
My friend’s dog “Wolfie” (a malamute) lives in Colorado now that she had to move to Utah to live with her son. Wolfie is with her grandson in CO. I hope it’s not a crime to name a dog “Wolfie”!
I want to add that my mother, who has been dead for 30 years, was raised with a wolf as a pet. She was one of 9 children who grew up in the bottoms, on a cotton farm. They rescued a wolf pup, and he lived with them for many years, as a pet, until he died.
It is common with wolf/dog hybrids to be a mix of German Shepherd and wolf. Mine was, too.
The one in my rural county was a sadistic nut. He was replaced by a wonderful man. You may have seen him on the news. He spent Thanksgiving in the dog pound to raise funds/awareness.
Sounds like “Wolfie” has a great home. I’m sure your friend misses him.
Ani-Yun-Wiya story:
The Great Spirit separated man from animals...He drew a line on the ground between them...
The line began to grow into a large canyon, just before it became too big, the dog leaped across and sat beside man...
“Um...arent dogs descended from wolves...our lab aussie mix could act wolf like at times...What idiots.”
Yeah, mine thinks she’s a wolf until she hears a food can opening.
I hope this works out for the owners. Some animal shelters come into the control of animal rights nuts. They usually try to find any reason to euthanize animals. The owners need to run their own DNA tests and be prepared to file suit.
