Hollywood studios could be in for another year of big-budget bombs and increased volatility around mid-budget releases, film industry analyst Doug Creutz warned in a report this week.
As he has been warning for years, the Cowen and Co. media analyst said that film studios increasing reliance on tentpoles and superhero movies will contribute to a decline in per-picture box office grosses in 2017, making what once seemed like sure-fire bets on big-budget flicks a decidedly risky enterprise.
According to Deadline, Creutz says the film industry in 2017 will be at least as difficult as it was in 2016, when operating profits at the major studios fell 14.6 percent, even as total box office receipts inched up 2.2 percent over 2015 numbers.
That increase was due largely to inflation and the increasing cost of movie tickets, the analyst warned. And Disney with its stable of established franchise properties like Star Wars and Marvel films reportedly captured the lions share of the haul with a staggering 60.5 percent of the industrys $4.18 billion in total operating profits.
Creutz noted that nearly three-dozen upcoming releases from major studios this year boast budgets north of $100 million, and predicted Fox and Paramount could struggle the most with offerings like War for the Planet of the Apes and Transformers: The Last Knight, respectively. He added that Disney would likely continue its dominance with a new Star Wars film and the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel, while Warner Bros. could see success with Wonder Woman, Justice League and Christopher Nolans World War II epic Dunkirk.
The Cowen and Co. analyst has expressed skepticism for years about the major studios shift toward pursuing similar release strategies, or what he described as putting more and more eggs in the franchise picture basket.

Every single frame of that movie is a masterpiece.
“Its the LGBT pandering garbage films they make then wonder why they bomb.”
It’s not just the LGBT movies.
When was the last time you saw a really good movie?
At least 90% are garbage. Put out something slick with big names and roll to DVD within a couple of weeks. Folks will rent anything on DVD at Red Box...based on title, names and cover pictures.
The studios are making money on the crap.
“yep, even DC is hedging its bets with only a 100 million budget for Wonder Woman, while Suicide Squad was budgeted at 170...”
Wonder Woman with Gal Gadot will gross $500mil in the theaters and another $500mil on DVD.
It’ll be crap, but it has Gal Gadot in it.
What percentage of people who watch a movie actually pay anything to see it? You might pay a penny on Netflix and nothing if you use Kodi. Tough proposition.
The movie industry has the same problem we have in motorsports entertainment, millennials aren’t showing up.
They need to bring back the Drive-In.
I still have one here in Sacramento, but they are rare.
Many folks don’t care what’s on at the Drive-In, they go anyway. Something will be tolerable.
Drive-ins are dead. Their era has passed. People weren’t going, that’s why they all closed.
Well, I’m a big fan of the Marvel movies, so I will see GOTGII.
Dunkirk looks good to me.
And I’ll even take in Wonder Woman and Justice League.
Comic book, science fiction and war movies are my personal favorites.
Me too, but I have a feeling it’s going to be a hit. Millennial and Get X mothers have no problem with LGBT, they loved the original, and they want their daughters to see the remake and love it too. Plus, they want to see it. It’s just the way it is. Society is sliding rapidly into the abyss. Really hope I’m wrong.
He mentions about four movies. Not exactly an in depth indictment of Hollywood.
Now Chris Evans, the actor who plays Cap, gave a non-answer When asked if Cap and Bucky were gay:
That wouldnt be so bad, mused Evans, its just never been part of my approach to the character. My subtext didnt involve that dynamic. I think even with the first Captain America film you see how drawn he is to Peggy Carter. I think in that final scene when Im putting that plane in the water, hes far more concerned with not getting to see her again than he is to give his own life.Maybe I just didnt do my damn job very well. But thats what I was going for. I think it was very clear that Peggy Carter was the first woman not just to give him the time of day, but to believe in him and to give him support and trust and honesty, and all these things I think he was hungry for. And I thought I put all that in the final scene, but maybe I didnt. Maybe I was just gazing at Sebastian [Stan] too much.
Bottom line, he's just the actor--not the writer, and not Stan Lee. So some people may think so, but even Evans says Cap loves Peggy Carter. It's just that HE, Evans, not Cap, likes to lust after the actor playing Bucky.
And you say real life, but of course, it isn't real. Just Hollywierd. Personally, if Cap was real, I think he'd be a VERY big Trump supporter and probably a FReeper. But Chris Evans is a fag actor, no doubt.
The last movie I went to see was “The Second Best Marigold Hotel” and that was like two or three years ago. Before that it was “Quartet” both seen in a small theater called “The Rose” in Port Townsend, WA. I don’t go to multi-screen cinema’s anymore.
They ought to be worrying about KODI.
They did NOT. It was a fan art statue some dum basses made and the ACTORS stood by it for a photo shoot. And they act like they like it. Dum basses, too. It is disgusting, but both the comic book and movie WRITERS have not made them kiss or be gay or anything like that.
BTW, when I Binged (better than google imho), I got several hits for Tony Start and Cap’n America kiss.
There’s nothing sacred to the gays. Bastards.
Hay, I’m not grousing about them being gay - could care less - but they can’t have their hetero female American heartthrob cake and eat it too, and tweet on Nov. 8 how sorrowful they are for their GLBT community that DJT was elected. Every cast member of the CA franchise is a vocal Trump-attacker.
One of my favorite TV shows is Agents of SHIELD, but I know everyone of the actors, from Clark Gregg on down--is rabidly anti-Trump.
Luckily I don't watch them for their political opinions, because they are inherently vapid and stupid.
I'm not threatened by their opinions because I'm know they're wrong. If they were actually WILLING to listen, and only debate with actual facts instead of media propaganda and lies, we'd win every time.
Here's a quote from that Gizmodo article that illustrates the vapid stupidity:
"In the past few weeks, a fan campaign around the hashtag #givecaptainamericaaboyfriend has cropped uppushing not just the desires of Stucky fans to see Steve and Bucky get together but the idea of bringing a wider level of diversity to Marvels movie universe, which is currently slight on LGBT representation (and hey, Steve and Bucky still would be nowhere near as weird as Steve and Sharon Carter hooking up)."
Slight on LGBT representation? Well yeah, since they are no more than 1% of the global population!
Kinsey's 10% was totally bogus as he was dealing with sentenced prisoners, who "became" gay in prison, but were exclusively hetero when released. And the whole idea that any entertainment has to be "representative" is hogwash. People either watch it or not. Go ahead and make movies about fags and dykes. I hope they make good money, but I ain't watching it.
I hear ya. Big fan of all the MCU films, but I don’t pay to see them, and imagine the pinko cast dying in grease fires as I watch them! I can’t think of one of the 30 revolving cast who doesn’t vocally, incessantly despise DJT and harangue their fans to do so as well.
If you recall, RDJ/Stark went the furthest out in IM2 when he told Paltrow/Potts he’d ‘had it with the liberal agenda.’ How that clip made the cut I’ll never know.
Marigold Hotel was a darn good movie.
I agree.
Hopefully enough Christians will stay home that Disney will rethink their policy on “message movies”.
