From the moment the GOP released the American Health Care Act, the first iteration of what will evolve into Obamacare repeal and replace legislation, conservatives have been griping. The editors of Investor’s Business Daily sum up the general reaction of the right thus: “Republicans have labored to produce plan that replaces ObamaCare with…. ObamaCare.” Interestingly, the editorial goes on to refute this argument by listing the bill’s positive attributes, including repeal of the law’s individual mandate, employer mandate, countless hidden taxes, and its expansion of HSAs. Yet IBD’s editors conclude that it “supports all the key elements of Obamacare.”
This is nonsense. Indeed, to employ an old aphorism, it makes the perfect the enemy of the good. This viewpoint is not merely unrealistic about what the Republicans can accomplish, considering their narrow margin in the Senate, but it actually reduces the chances that a repeal bill will ever reach the President’s desk. Here’s a little reality check for conservatives and libertarians who fantasize about “going back” to free market medicine — we haven’t had anything resembling a free health care market since World War II and we will never have one. Why? The public doesn’t really want one. What the voters really want is cheap, accessible care — any way they can get it.

If no bill is passed, won’t Obamacare collapse by the end of the year? Maybe just let that happen, then repeal it and add free market reforms.

We no longer have health insurance. It’s “coverage” now. If that industry died and took their blood sucking lobbyists with them nobody would shed a tear.

Unfortunately the collapse of Obamacare will end up with taxpayers footing the bill. The courts have already ruled that we have to fund insurance companies that were suffering severe losses. From what’s in this story, I guess there are good things in this bill. But I don’t doubt most of them will be removed by Democrats before it finally passes (if it passes). Like defunding Planned Parenthood. The Dems won’t let that get by.
We need to implement creeping capitalism, HSAs that swamp the rest of the bad market.
Nobody is screaming for free-market healthcare. What we want is Obamacare repealed completely, then down the road work to get health-care as much as free-market as possible.
Repealing Obamacare doesn't make health-care into a magical Adam Smith paradise. It'll merely go back to the same old semi-socialist status-quo.
If Republicans pass their version of health-care reform, it'll be called TrumpCare by the Dems in 2018 and they'll use it to take Republicans out. Republicans will be left to defend legislation that is basically Obamacare. They will own Obamacare hook, line, and sinker.
If conservatives hold out for free market health care, repeal may never happen.
Fine. Just eliminate the mandates and leave the rest of it as-is. It will implode even faster than it already is.
There is a reason I gave up my lifetime membership in the R party when dubya was president and they controlled the entire congress and did nothing. I feel oddly vindicated.
And this is why I bought my farm (now 32 acres) in south Central KY two weeks before the 2008 election and moved there from Seattle. I was forced to deal with it myself and prepare for this crap.
The only decent bill is to remove the ILLEGAL actions of the federal government and return healthcare to the states or the people thereof.

Timmy — I like the way you think. Everyone, including the author (David Catron) has an opinion. He labels the quest for a total free market and repeal as nonsense. It is no more nonsense than his unsupported musings. Like a lot of people today, he wants a quick resolution. Personally, I’m in favor of a quick, down and dirty, repeal. If that doesn’t happen, I’d like a slow and torturous repeal. Said another way - I’d like a total repeal and return to the free market. If insurance could not be afforded then this is America. If someone wants it, and can’t afford it, there will be other options like before. How bad do they want it? A not so small additional item for me is to repeal all mandates and taxes. The federal government has no Constitutional authority to meddle in either health care, or health insurance.
Fine. Let it collapse. It is all on Ryan.
The problem seems to be that the Republicans just can’t help themselves. Why did they ever try to sneak in a gift to insurance company execs?
Sounds like the Spectator wants to be the turd in the punch bowl. The conservatives need to stand strong, there is no rteform with the return to the free market. NO! to Ryancare!NO! to McConnelcare.
I’m having a hard time understanding why we even need a “health insurance” industry at this point. If the Fedgov is going to be cutting them checks directly to them we might as well cut out the middleman and deal with hospitals directly.
The stench from this bill is nauseating. Very disappointing to see POTUS playing along with this charade.
President Trump has already eliminated the mandate at the enforcement level since IRS will no longer reject tax returns without the ACA declaration.
So yeah, the entire house of cards known as Obamacare will now collapse in no time flat.
If Republicans aren’t willing to fashion a market based reform, as they promised us over and over again that they would do, then they should just wash their hands of the whole debacle and let it die on its own.
Sure, there will be chaos and pain for many. But that’s better than version 2.0 of the outrageous system we currently have in place.
