Russian hackers are gaining access to emails and other information belonging to progressive groups and then sifting it for embarrassing information. As many as a dozen groups have been blackmailed with demands for thousands of dollars in bitcoins. Some have even agreed to pay in the hopes the hacked information wont be released.
In one case, a non-profit group and a prominent liberal donor discussed how to use grant money to cover some costs for anti-Trump protesters. The identities were not disclosed, and its unclear if the protesters were paid.
At least some groups have paid the ransoms even though there is little guarantee the documents wont be made public anyway. Demands have ranged from about $30,000 to $150,000, payable in untraceable bitcoins, according to one of the people familiar with the probe
The Center for American Progress, a Washington think tank with strong links to both the Clinton and Obama administrations, and Arabella Advisors, which guides liberal donors who want to invest in progressive causes, have been asked to pay ransoms, according to people familiar
After the story was published, a spokesperson for The Center for American Progress told Bloomberg, CAP has no evidence we have been hacked, no knowledge of it and no reason to believe it to be true. CAP has never been subject to ransom. But the other group mentioned in that paragraph above, Arabella Advisors, revealed it was the target of a financially motivated cyber crime.
With Democrats heavily invested in the idea that the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to steal the election from Hillary Clinton, the latest hacking is said to be setting off alarms that this is a further attempt to impact the U.S. political system. That could be but the demand for money seems to offer a clear alternative explanation.

I’m deeply troubled?
Interesting that some of the groups paid off. I guess they got a sneak preview of what they could expect if they did not payoff. It must have scared the beJesus out of them.

Oh, I think we know who the anti-American SCUMBAGS are.
Breaking into the DNC servers is hard work.
It deserves to be rewarded, particularly after Podesta refused to cough up even a penny. Ditto that cheapskate Putin. A guy has gotta make a living. Blackmail seems the obvious choice, particularly given all that great DNC material that was downloaded. Can’t let that go to waste.
1) The blackmailers have little motive not to just demand bigger ransoms later until they get as much as they can. When they finally run you out of what you can pay or are willing to pay then what? Likely they release it and all your ransom is for nothing.
2) Paying makes blackmail more profitable, and encourages more blackmail of others and maybe even yourself on a future occasion.
3) If you have done something shabby, it is best to come clean. Repentance is never fun, but it is the right thing and good for the soul.
Couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of LAW BREAKERS.
I still haven’t figured out what a “bitcoin” is, how to get one, or what to do with it. Is it anything like a “round tuit”?
I definitely know what a “round tuit” is, and boyoboy, if I ever get one of those, there’ll be no stopping me!
You mean they no longer use 'password' as the password?
They need to soften it. Maybe combine with a Russian bride. Tis is the season.
A prominent liberal donor. Gee, I wonder who that could be.
Good.
I want to see HIS donations to progressives go right into a Russian’s fat wallet.
They’ll do far less damage there in Russia than if used by the progressive American Soviets.
What if it’s more than shabby and would possibly invite and investigation and possibly prison time.
I’d rather go to my mother in law’s than go to prison.
Let me stop laughing first. OK. OK. OK. I can keep a straight fa—BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! OK. Now I’m good. I’m deeply trou—BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Damn.
Former aparatchiks have to make living, tovarisch.
A bitcoin is a type of internet currency. Others may have a better description of or background regarding the origins of the bitcoin. The first time I heard about bitcoins was in reference to The Silk Road and The Dread Pirate Roberts.
