Just when you thought the 'Russians-did-it' meme was fading, WaPo reporters manage to find DoJ officials who say then-Senator Jeff Sessions spoke twice last year with Russia’s ambassador to the United States - encounters he did not disclose when asked about possible contacts with Moscow during his confirmation hearing to become attorney general.
At his Jan. 10 Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing, Sessions was asked by Sen. Al Franken, a Minnesota Democrat, what he would do if he learned of any evidence that anyone affiliated with the Trump campaign communicated with the Russian government in the course of the 2016 campaign.
“I’m not aware of any of those activities,” he responded.
He added: “I have been called a surrogate at a time or two in that campaign and I did not have communications with the Russians.”
And now, as The Hill reports that according to The Washington Post report, President Trump's attorney general, Jeff Sessions, spoke twice with Russia's ambassador to the United States while Trump was on the campaign trail.
Justice Department officials said one of the meetings was a private conversation between Sessions and Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak in Sessions's office. The private meeting reportedly took place during the same time intelligence officials have said Russia was interfering with the U.S. presidential election through a hacking campaign.
Officials said Sessions did not consider the conversations relevant to the lawmakers’ questions and did not remember in detail what he discussed with Kislyak.
“There was absolutely nothing misleading about his answer,” said Sarah Isgur Flores, Sessions’s spokeswoman.

Franken asked Sessions what he would do (read recuse himself or no) if any Trump campaign reps were found to have had contact with the Russian government in the course of said campaign.
Sessions responded that he was unaware of any such activities and that he himself (sometimes called a surrogate) did not have communications with the Russians and was unable to comment on it. He unfortunately did not then disclose that he had two meetings with the Russian ambassador as part of his Senate Committee work which is now giving the mouthfoamers basis to quibble about semantics.
It would’ve been prudent for him to clarify that he had met with the Russian ambassador as part of his Senate Committee to avoid any confusion, appearance of disception, harping opportunities from the left wingnuts...
Sessions was not a member of the Trump administration while Trump was on the campaign trail.
Do you mean a vendetta against Trump? I don't see that at all.
I’m guessing very few, if any, senators have cause to meet with the Russian ambassador. But Sessions says his two meetings during the campaign course were instead part of his work on the Senate Armed Services Committee. According to The Hill, they polled the 26 SASC members on this, and of the 20 that had thus far responded, none had met with the Russian Ambassador. It remains to be seen whether this is fake news or not.
While not a fan of such personally, I don’t know of anything that precludes a Senator of talking with foreign gov officials.
Where it gets muddy with Sessions is that he denied such under oath and is now the AG.
That’s the bottom line. While I am curious to the content of Flynn, Sessions, others conversations with Kislyak, unless it is found that the Russian Gov, in conjunction with the Trump campaign, brainwashed or changed votes of the electorate, this is all moot. Next you know, Pelosi and Warren will be yammering for mandatory scans of computer chips in all our heads.
Interesting point. Who first start planting the Trump/Putin seeds? Was is it response to something he said (i.e. Putin was a stronger leader than Obama)?
My thoughts too on the timing.
The DOJ holdover and/or obamaomau-ites are ‘leaking’ to NYT to try to oust Sessions after a little over 2 weeks in office—
this immediately AFTER it is announced that a “slush fund” of internal DOJ monies has been discovered in which DOJ funds were mis-directed, federal funds— directed by the “JUST-US” holder and lynch gang members exclusively to left wing/marxist “legal rights” organizations to. fund. them. To fund their activities from WITHIN the US Government. Under the direction of Holder and Lynch. And... who would they be most afraid of kicking out their cockroach selves other than Attorney General Sessions— who is just getting started.
After all these are ALL groups that SHOULD be funded by US Taxpayers shouldn’t they? For “environmental rights” “civil” rights for certain lives that matter, and rights for liberation theology of the Comintern variety.
