Threatening secession is far from the only thing that the Golden State has in common with the Old South. Over 60 percent of California voters went for Hillary Clinton a margin of more than 4 million votes over Donald Trump.
Since Clintons defeat, the state seems to have become unhinged over Trumps unexpected election.
Calexit supporters brag that they will have enough signatures to qualify for a ballot measure calling for Californias secession from the United States. Some California officials have talked of the state not remitting its legally obligated tax dollars to the federal government. They talk of expanding its sanctuary cities into an entire sanctuary state that would nullify federal immigration law.
Californians also now talk about the value of the old Confederate idea of states rights. They whine that their state gives far too much revenue to Washington and gets too little back. Residents boast about how their cool culture has little in common with the rest of the U.S. Some Californians claim the state could easily go it alone, divorced from the United States. Sound a bit familiar?
In December 1860, South Carolina seceded from the Union in furor over the election of Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln did not receive 50 percent of the popular vote. He espoused values the state insisted did not reflect its own. In eerie irony, liberal California is now mirror-imaging the arguments of reactionary South Carolina and other Southern states that vowed to go it alone in 1860 and 1861.
Like California, South Carolina insisted it could nullify federal laws within its state borders. Like California, South Carolina promised to withhold federal revenues.
Like California, South Carolina and other Confederate states bragged that their unique economies did not need the Union.

They should ask South Carolina how that went after 1861.
Maybe “Jefferson California” can remain as “California” and everything south of Oakland will just be Ceded to Mexico and the idiots there can negotiate with Mexico Nationhood....
That way we keep 50 stars on the flag, 50 states, gain a conservative state, and get tp punish all of hollyweird and silicone valley by having them governed by the 3rd world country they SAY they love to damned much...
That’s a Bingo!
I vote they become a mexican territory. They are a big drain on federal dollars
That would be an epic win. We will take the eastern part of the state. Oregon and WA state should join them.
You can only leave if you take the nutty 9th Circuit with you.
It is ironic that California is the modern South Carolina. Is SanDiego the equivalent to Fort Sumter?
Sorry, California, but...
Then invade and reclaim it and kick the liberals out.
We don’t need California. They need us. However, the new Republik of Kalifornia could provide a Pacific coast launch point for a foreign invasion force (not just those south of the border) that would be necessary for land forces to attack the USA. Countries, such as China and the Norks, that lust over the land and natural resources of the USA.
California’s progressivism is in a fever - which is signs it is very sick.
The Willamette Valley of Oregon (Portland south to Eugene) is the part of the state that is socialistic. The rest of the state is rural and conservative.
In Washington, it's the part west of the Cascades that is socialistic. East of the mountains, it's rural and conservative.
Washington is actually two states unhappily married at the Cascades, and the same is mostly true for Oregon.
If the US is divisible, then California is divisible. If Washington and Oregon wish to leave, then both states are divisible. Western Washington would probably be happier annexed into the Canadian province of British Columbia.
The Federal Government owns 45% of all the land in California. I doubt that the Feds would gift this to the Golden State.
Calexit.
Historically—in 1838 Mexican Governor Juan B. Alvarado thought about making California an independent nation—He even designed a flag. A white field with a single Big Red five pointed star. The red star is found on the California State Flag today—Maybe the Alvarado flag can be recycled again for the new independent Republic of California? Its a bit like the Bonny Blue Flag—White star on a blue field. If other states join in the Rebellion (Oregon? Washington? Nevada? Idaho? New Mexico, Arizona) More red stars could be added to the new Pacific Republic. Maybe seek help from China? Or help Hawaii become a kingdom again? What ever they do—It will be short lived!
Pacific County is actually pretty conservative too.
Interesting. I agree. And we wouldn’t want to abandon the conservatives in those regions.
With that said, I am guessing this will never happen.
The South was right.
And indeed, secession is a right and state’s rights are important.
I would be all too glad for California to leave. Wonder if my brother would stay.
