Los Angeles Liberals used to hate secession, the notion that states could leave the Union as they did before the Civil War because they didnt agree with the policies of the federal government. But with Donald Trumps election, many California liberals suddenly have warm words for a budding ballot initiative that has just begun collecting signatures in order to place secession, or Calexit, on the ballot.
At the height of the tea-party movement, Texas governor Rick Perry merely hinted at the thought that Texas might react to President Obamas executive overreach by reclaiming its one-time status as an independent republic. He was denounced as something akin to a traitor; critics lamented that he wanted to return Texas to the era of sharecroppers or Jim Crow. Now Dan Schnur, who teaches political communications at the University of Southern California, says California is the new Texas, with its elected officials promoting a virtual secession. The secessionists plan to take to the legislature, the courts, and the streets to resist Trumps agenda. Never before have so many prominent Californians gotten into such a reactionary, defensive crouch.

On policy after policy, from dramatically higher minimum wages to the nations most steeply progressive income tax, Californias leaders are pursuing a 180-degree departure from the priorities of Team Trump. They say this is the perfect time for a breakup, and they cite a new Reuters-Ipsos poll showing that 32 percent of Californians (mostly Democrats) back the idea.
As a Californian, I view the Calexit movement with amusement, since there is zero chance that Congress would ever provide enough votes to allow California to leave peacefully, and the alternative exit ramp would involve a modern-day civil war.

That would actually work pretty well for me! In particular, the Navy and Marine presence in San Diego would remain in the US. Plus, San Diego is a nice area! heh
It's really too bad it won't happen, as if it did the Hollywood idiocracy wouldn't have anything to whine about anymore...
Add Sacramento and Davis to the green mix
both are lost ..
Now that looks good
Actually, the Green should be extended along the coast all the way to the Canadian border as was predicted by Robert Heinlein many years ago.
The area should not secede, the area should be purged from the Union as if it were a cancer
A big American version of Gaza strip. Nice.
Calexit will serve the interests of Aztlan and its associate crazies.
Step one, leave the U. S. Step 2, join Mexico. Step 3 New Mexico and Arizona. Aztlan achieved.
The area is loaded with lovely oceanfront real estate. I think we ought to keep it. Relocate the current residents...to some other oceanfront territory. Like the Aleutians.
That’s a good map of the hot zone. Totally lost. The remainder of the state has its leftists, but nowhere so overwhelmingly dominant. The ones around Sacramento would probably flee if the State government jobs dried out.
Now that’s California dreaming. Love it!
Based on the election results map which I just looked at, we should add about 6 more counties to the north of the green area, going up about half way to the Oregon border.
Just call the red part of the state Nevada.
The dems tried this 160 years ago, did I not work out.
Upstate NY wants to secede.
NOT from the Union.
Just from Downstate.
“Step one, leave the U. S. Step 2, join Mexico. Step 3 New Mexico and Arizona. Aztlan achieved.”
Actually one of the benefits of this proposal is the US border would remain in US control. Plus, there are plenty of folks in AZ and NM that support President Trump.
I think a ton of illegals will self-deport in the months ahead. Winning!
The other advantage there is that it ensures that the border with Mexico is in the Real American State of California instead of the Marxist State of California — which means that the wall and all border crossings will be in America.
We’d be better off without California. Move the naval base to Texas. Pity the true Americans who are stuck in that cesspool.
Nevada who voted for Hillary. I don’t think so.
Hollywood is really pissed off because Trump is going to cut off their taxpayer funded subsidies. It is a quid pro quo thing.
Hollywood obviously will be its Capitol.
Normal people in California deserve a break from the crazies. You’ll never see anything like it elsewhere—a population that just loves to vote itself higher taxes at every opportunity.
