As President-elect Trump readies to take control of Washington where he has promised a hiring freeze or worse, worried are federal workers are looking to a new $40,000 buyout program set up at the Pentagon but expected to be expanded to other departments.

Several trade publications that cover federal workers and legislation said that the buyout, increased in legislation from $25,000, will likely be a hit in the Defense Department as the Pentagon moves to cut headquarters staff.

The cash is available to civilian bureaucrats. It was included in the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2017.

Some federal workers are worried about Trump's plans, concerned that he may go further than a hiring freeze.

Oh jeez, just dump them. Not one in 10 of them ever earned an honest nickel.

Federal employees have never shown themselves to be working for AMERICA. The majority have always been there for the bucks. Meet their demands, give the rats their cheese, but do set the traps to kill their ilk. In the future, before hiring any federal employee, plan to extensively vet them

I’ll pay it. Think of it as an investment in a smaller government. The problem is that many of the ones who can leave aren’t the ones we need to leave. But it’s a start.

I assume that you do not include military as “federal employees”.

The problem is....get rid of people with jobs which do not require replacement so you’re not paying two salaries at one time.

They can eye it all they want - there’s always a set of requirements as to whether or not one qualifies for the buyout (or early retirement) - even if they all qualify, it will be much cheaper in the long run....freezing the hiring and letting a lot go by attrition will also save billions.

You assume correctly if by ‘military’ you refer to enlisted men who have the spirit and will fight for our country. Others who have only a title and a significant paycheck are another group entirely There is a very wide margin that separates the two.

As one who served on active duty for 8+ years, I must say you couldn’t be more wrong in your assessment.

They can’t give it to more than 25,000 people.
The people who do take it must wait 12 months to be rehired.
If they are rehired within 5 years, they have to pay the money back.(There are exceptions)

Section 9902(f)(5)(A)(ii) of title 5, United States Code

You could easily dump 50% of the federal work force with little or no change being felt by the average american.

Au contraire. It would be like a warm sunny spring day after a harsh winter. Remember most of these folks spend their time trying to prevent anything useful from being done in either the public or private sector.

A lot of DoD postings need to be gone but we never hear about personnel cuts in the civilian agencies. They are even more bloated and incompetent than anything in the DoD.

My spouse has been praying for a early retirement package from the USPS. Despite what many believe here on FR, many federal employees are being worked to death. Doing many jobs within a job and working their butts off. I know this from experience, 6 days on, Sunday off and 2 Mondays off monthly. I feel like a golf widow. This has been going on for more then 3 years, almost 4.

In the private sector you’re lucky to get a couple of grand after training your foreign replacement.

The greatest number falling for the buyout will be those already eligible to retire. Their retirement will be secure, and the $40,000 will be icing on the cake. The older retirement age ones will also be more prone to be conservative with a higher degree of work ethic, which really may not be saying much.

The younger ones will stay one and fight to keep their jobs. These are the lefties and more apt to be their either for a free ride or to change the govt. This bunch needs to be just kicked out.

My point is, keep it fair, keep it simple. Just have a reduction in force based on productivity/usefulness where leaving is mandatory, give them a severance pay commensurate with their length of service that does not exceed the $40,000.

A hiring freeze means no conservatives coming in to replace all the lefties running things now.

I'd have a study done to find all the worst liberals in government then transfer them all to the EPA. Once they are all there I'd just go ahead and disband the EPA altogether and send them all their walking papers. Bye bye!

I read the announcement and it is for those whose positions have already been identified for elimination. It is to get them gone faster. Any takers will NOT be replaced.
