Martin Scorsese: 'Cinema is gone'
AP ^ | Dec 20, 6:17 PM EST | JAKE COYLE

NEW YORK (AP) -- Martin Scorsese's Manhattan office, in a midtown building a few blocks northwest of the cordoned-off Trump Tower, may be the most concentrated bastion of reverence for cinema on the face of the earth.

There's a small screening room where Scorsese screens early cuts of his films and classic movies for his daughter and his friends. There's his personal library of thousands of films, some he taped himself decades ago. Film posters line the walls. Bookshelves are stuffed with film histories. And there are editing suites, including the one where Scorsese and his longtime editor Thelma Schoonmaker regularly toil with a monitor dedicated to the continuous, muted playing of Turner Classic Movies.

Few today are making movies with the scope and ambition of "Silence" - a fact, he grants, that makes him feel like one of the last of a dying breed in today's film industry.

"Cinema is gone," Scorsese says. "The cinema I grew up with and that I'm making, it's gone."

For those of us who love TCM other venues for the oldies, these are the good old days.

Umm Martin, if you’re still making it it ISN’T gone. We get this every couple of years, one of the old big dogs who apparently never go to their art house cinema and have no idea who Wes Anderson or the Coen Brothers are declare that the old timie creative stuff is gone.

‘Cinema’ was gone when its stars became spokesmen for leftist causes. Star celebrity is not provenance for intellectual excellence in any capacity.

I went to the source and read the entire article and I’m still not sure what his specific complaints with contemporary cinema are.

If they stop with the agenda based movies and concentrate on entertainment, cinema can live on.

Hollywood has become comtrolled by Marxists. I cannot remember the last film I watched that wasn’t explicitly pro-communist.

And the quality of films has declined greatly too.

Take Star Wars for example - it’s no coincidence since ever film made since the Empire Strikes back has been almost universally regarded as dreadful. It was after ESB that the Marxists decided to get their hands on it

We need a new Hollywood where’ll the great film makers can go and the stars just act and don’t become politically active. There needs to be a “rabid liberal” alarm that will warn them in the screen test phase.

Cinema left when the hollywood yahoos, decided to educate instead of entertain.

The concept of using theatrical reconstruction (visual media) of an event, is typically half-assed at best; not all, but most.

For hollywood, the ‘truth’ is whatever you want to be, that is why the place is also known as ‘fantasy land’. Sad, so much stuff is really badly slanted and I mean both ways.

Martin, if you were a musician you would have thrown yourself out a window by now. You have no idea how RUINED that is.

Joe McCarthy was not only right but prescient.

We need to root them out and cut off their incomes. The Ameritrash actors are our enemies

I am a huge film fan, and I have hundreds of Blu-rays and DVDs and I love TCM, but I seldom watch anything new. It seems like creativity is gone from film-making. One thing that’s gone are the great “women’s pictures” of the 40’s and 50’s. I mean movies like “The Letter”, and “All About Eve”, “A Letter to Three Wives” and “Rebecca”. The type of movie that would have starred Bette Davis, or Olivia DeHavilland or Irene Dunne, et al. If they make those types of movies today they will be cheezy Hallmark movies; although both men and women watched them back then. Today everything has to be full of spectacular CGI special effects. We will never see another James Bond film like “From Russia With Love” because the ending was “not explosive enough”.

I agree. He is much maligned by the left but the fact of his suspicions and justifications for such exist.

Most movies today include an excess of profanity, nudity, explicit sex scenes, out-of-marriage and/or obligatory mixed racial relationships, homosexuality, anti-Christian (pro-athiest) and other leftist politics and agenda. It’s a mirror image of Hollywood itself.

McCarthy had nothing to do with Hollywood. he was investigating the Army.

To me, a very important component of film largely
disappeared with the onset of the modern culture
(circa Woostock era): subtlety.

EXACTLY. The failure of After Earth a few years ago and now Miss Sloan tells me Hollywood faces a massive problem: movies and TV shows greenlighted for production and/or in production within the last 18 months assume Hillary Clinton would become the next President of the USA. But she lost, and as a result the movies and TV shows may have themes that are out of sync with public sentiment now that Trump will soon be President, which could result in way lower TV ratings and substantial box office losses.
