Current dietary advice says foods containing high levels of saturated fats such as cream, butter, red meat, eggs and cheese should be avoided because they increase the risk of heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and cancer.
But a study published in a leading medical journal has found the opposite is true, with a diet full of natural fats improving the health of people taking part.
Professor Sherif Sultan, a heart specialist from the University of Ireland, said: We urgently need to overturn current dietary guidelines."
"People should not be eating high carbohydrate diets as they have been told over the past decade.
Instead our diets should be largely based on good quality high-fat foods. This will prevent the rising epidemic of Type 2 diabetes and reverse the growing numbers of people suffering weight-related heart problems.
The study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found overweight middle-aged men who ate high levels of saturated fat and low levels of carbohydrate became slimmer and healthier.
Researchers also saw reduced blood pressure and glucose levels, which are associated with a lower risk of heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and cancer, in the patients.

“The key is moderation. Eat whatever you want, in moderation.”
The only thing that makes sense. All this “good for you”, “bad for you” crap is B.S. We are all individuals and there is no good or bad. Just eat what works for you.
I, myself, am 65 years old. I eat no vegetables except potatoes, rice and grains. I eat LOTS of candy, ice cream, soda pop, cheese, beef, chicken and bacon. I’m not overweight, my blood pressure is normal, I haven’t had so much as a cold in more than 25 years, my blood work is textbook right on the money. I wouldn’t recommend my diet to anyone else, but it apparently works for me. We are all different. Eat what you like but don’t over do it.
Well, Jane, it just goes to show you, it’s always something if it ain’t one thing, it’s another - Roseanne Roseannadanna
I’ve been eating high protein natural fat almost no carbs and no processed food all my life-my mom and aunts were healthy food freaks-except for when I was pregnant with the cub I’ve weighed the same as I did at 17...
Also, while I’m ranting... a glass or two of red wine along with the fat and protein for those who should or can drink works wonders. Of course, In moderation for those who permit themselves...
It's pricier but I get the whole milk yogurt and skyr plain and mix in frozen blueberries.
You’re welcome.
I’ve been doing it for a long time, it’s not just a temporary diet, but rather it’s a way of life.
Not all sausages are created equal.
Out here, they’re all the “emulsified” variety...ground into mush...yuck. The Germans and Polish in the Midwest know how to make proper sausage, both in the coarse grind and the seasoning. Get natural casing so they go “snap”.
Italian sausage (green peppers and onions) Polish sausage (sauerkraut and onions) smoked sausage, Andouille (black beans and shrimp)...all great by themselves or in recipes.
Great value in ground pork....it’s cheap. You can mix it with burger, make Mexican filling, chili, stretch ground beef for burgers.
TACO SALAD! (make fresh salsa and use some Ranch-with-bacon dressing)
Steaks (of course you cowboys already know this) Ribeye, Porterhouse, maybe strip-steak. On the grill, burned in butter.
Baby Bella mushrooms/caramelized onions....Yeah baby!
It’s not food, it’s activity. If you eat lots of food (any food) and sit on your ass for 17 of your waking hours, you’ll get fat.
Even the ADA tells people to eat a balanced diet with carbs. Might as well suck a gun barrel for 20 years (it’s a slow death).
Have a brother with type 2. last time I saw him his idiot wife, the nurse, gave him a large piece of pie after dinner. All I could do is shake my head in wonder. Type 2 also killed my father at 70.
Tablespoons of sugar in each.
What is MCT oil & how much of that & the butter do you put in each cup?
and many people live well and long without any meat or animal products for protein.
Vegetables are carbohydrates - so you are wrong to say all those people groups ate very few to no carbs.
I was talking about grains which many people are avoiding eating. Bodies were made to consume some amount of grains too as our ancestors did just fine, so obviously it’s things that have changed in our source of grains and other foods that makes today’s grains more problematic for some.
It’s better to avoid sugars most of the time and occasionally have some as a treat. All sugars cause the same insulin reaction. Even Honey and fruit. Natural yes, but your body cannot tell the difference.
There’s a lot of research out there beginning to show that some types of Alzheimer’s might be a type 3 diabetes.
As a college student, my friends and I figured out the hydrogenated oil scam ( late 70’s) taking an unsaturated oil and saturating it makes no sense as to being healthy. The natural saturated fats such as butter also have enzymes in them that help break the saturated fats down.
I love milk and butter but I could never stand buttermilk.
After low-carbing for a year, I cut out sugar and all grains, and have been eating a ketogenic diet. Keto is high fat, moderate protein, and minimal carbs from non-starchy vegetables and fruits such as berries. I feel amazing, have gotten rid of fatigue, brain fog, depression, irritable bowel issues, heartburn, and elevated blood pressure. I’m down more than 70 lbs., with minimal muscle loss due to truly losing fat and not muscle tissue.
I really don’t ration my fats - coconut oil, olive oil, butter, cream, cheese, eggs, avocados, and nuts.
I make baked goods like biscuits, cookies, cakes and quick breads using almond flour and coconut flour with stevia and erythritol to sweeten.
My bulletproof coffee recipe is 1 T. coconut oil, 1 T. grass-fed unsalted butter, and 1 T. collagen powder in coffee sweetened with a little stevia. It is delicious! For those curious to try it, you must emulsify this in a blender or with a milk frother so it gets creamy. Stirring the ingredients will just give you an oil slick on top of your coffee.
I am a 55 year old male. For the past 5 years I have been eating a very low carb diet. 10-20 grams of carbs a day. I almost never touch anything made out of flour. I rarely have rice or potatoes. I never touch deserts or sweets of any kind. I don’t drink or eat anything with sweeteners of any type.
I do eat meat of any type but no BBQ. I do eat cheese, beans, nuts and all green vegetables. I eat until I am no longer hungry. I don’t limit my food intake at all. I really don’t exercise at all. I drink tea, coffee, seltzer water. Ever few days I drink wine.
I have had a physical with blood work every two years. I just had my third blood work since I have been doing this. My cholesterol is around 200 was 260. Triglycerides are very low. Blood sugar is very low. I lost 25 pounds when I went on this diet and it has stayed off for 5 years. And my blood pressure and pulse are very good.
Its rare that I break my diet but I will have a small piece of birthday cake or if a women insists I try her pie. I try not to be a jerk about it. I have found that things i used to like such as Coke, are just too sweet for me now. If I miss anything it might be really good bread and good Ice cream. But I don’t have problems avoiding them.
My wife and I are on the same diet she has lost 40 pounds as well. We went on this diet because her joints were hurting her and she was gaining weight. The head of Nutrition and Duke and Stanford both had Youtube.com videos that were convincing as well as Gary Taubes. Its pretty much the original Atkins diet.
Yes.
It took a gall bladder removal to get me to develop a taste for vegetables.
Before then, I really didn’t like many.
No, not at all. I don’t strictly follow any particular plan and eat a wide variety. I eat all I want and never concern myself with calories. It’s mostly about avoiding, as much as possible, a few things—sugar, grains, and potatoes. I’ve done it so long now that it’s not a problem for me. Once that carb addiction was broken it was easy for me to stick with. I eat a lot of meat, cheese, eggs, shrimp, and salads. I know some people doing Atkins don’t eat certain vegetables, but I eat all of the vegetables I want. I look for ways to get more fats like cream cheese, grass fed butter, coconut oil, olive oil, and whole cream. I make a variety of “fat bombs” snack and eat them regularly to get more fat.
Over a period of years I have taken various ideas and cobbled together my own diet plan that looks a lot like a paleo diet. I was unable to work for almost a year at one point, so I made the diet changes out of sheer necessity. Maintaining my college weight is a nice side benefit.
Last thought, you mentioned you are addicted to sugar. I’m convinced sugar is toxic, at least for me.
