Would give anything to still have it. Could repair it with a paper clip and a rubber band. Nothing fancy just a dependable little fun car

The Edsel was hyped by Ford as something totally new, exciting and innovative. The actual car brought to market was a Mercury with more chrome and a quirky grille. The negative hype was, I believe, fed by competitors fearing another make from Ford eating into their sales of more upmarket models. They’re not bad cars, the styling has in my opinion aged well. Pretty cool old cars, if you find one that wasn’t exposed to road salt and rusted out.

The swing axle on the first generation Corvair was not much different from the swing axle on a VW or Porsche. US drivers were by and large not accustomed to oversteer due to the weight balance being shifted to the rear. They’d overcorrect and spin the car. Didn’t inflate the tires correctly or maintain the toe-in alignment, either. Regardless, the rear suspension was re-engineered with the second generation, no more swing axle. Independent rear suspension, very similar to the Corvette. Too late, though, Nader and the left had destroyed it, people were afraid of them. GM was never the same, they got cautious and timid. No more pushing the envelope with innovative designs. Went from the excellent Corvair to the execrable Vega in the space of three years.

Pax,
I’m happy that your house guest is a deplorable, could be difficult otherwise. Give him my best, from an adorable deplorable FReeper (formerly from the great state of Colorado).

Good morning Deplorables! I’m feeling a little guilty down here in AZ... sleeping with the window wide open and the ceiling fan on high, snuggled up in my down sleeping bag (inside of course). The expected high is 76 and 49 for the low.

Lots of heavy hitters riding the #26 golden bullet elevator today at TT.

The press pool has grown quite vociferous in their attempts to elicit comments out of the day’s interview guests and applicants, as they walk past the press pool.

Maybe someone can list all of the expected visitors to TT here at the thread?

I recognized Trump nemesis Jeff Bezos, by his shaved head, and two attractive women of mid age (one blonde and one brunette) rode the elevator up to floor #26, to speak with the boss. Since there is to be a tech summit today, most of the planned attendees are arriving within close proximity of each other.

Re-read the thread from last night for good measure. There are some really great minds that think alike here at the Trump Family Thread. Without any coordination, different individuals step up each and every day, and night, and author some really terrific and quite authentic opinions, AND fire off classic zingers that truly lift this poster’s spirits to great heights. Keep em’ coming! Oh- there’s the serious stuff posted too, like supporting research, tweets, images, links, videos, interviews, etc!

The FSM (fake-stream media) doesn’t stand a chance! WOOT! WOOT!

Live broadcast from the Tech Summit!

It will be interesting to learn which media outlets were permitted in the room.

I don’t know if I just got used to driving it, but never had any driving issues with my Bug (didn’t know about the axle).

Too bad the Corvair had to go to the Vega (ugh), which was almost as bad as the Pacer (IMHO ugly car - apologies to any that had and loved one).

My dad had a lot of friends who liked unusual cars. He, himself, was fairly conservative and cautious, the only time he went out on a limb with a car as a family man was a ‘66 Galaxie 500 7 Litre, beautiful car. He loved it, my mom was a little afraid of it after she spun it out leaving a carwash. Very high powered engine.

The swing axle was less of an issue with VW because people went into buying and driving a VW knowing it was different and appreciating that it wasn’t just “car” that you drove as you’d always driven. The air-cooled four was a much lighter engine, too, so the weight bias wasn’t as great. It was not a very high powered engine at all, either, they started out with like 36 hp if I recall correctly, so getting into trouble was much less likely. The Corvair went up to 180 hp.

Pacers? Sort of love-hate here. The later wagons didn’t look so bad. I have a soft spot for AMC, god how they tried with so little to work with. Despite it all, they came out with some interesting vehicles and a few great ones. Studebaker, I love them for the same reason. They had a few awesome ones.

My first car was a Vega. I wanted a small car. I married into a Auto and Body Shop family and they kept the Vega in great shape. It was perhaps the only Vega on the road right before I sold it. LOL I got a very good price for it from a young man who was very excited to buy it. LOL He couldn’t get over how good it ran. My husband had bought a car while in Vietnam and when he returned it was delivered. It was a blue Dodge Charger perhaps 67 or 68yr. It was really a pretty car.

The early Vegas before those big bumpers were not bad looking, but the appeal ended with the styling. Rust, trim falling off, plastic pieces breaking off of the interior and then you have the aluminum four cylinder engine warping the block routinely. I had an older cousin who bought a Vega Kammback wagon in ‘72, navy blue. He kept it up perfectly, too, but he had a time staying on top of it. A lot of time and expense.

Good morning? We have less than two hours of sunlight. A very chilly but sunny day here. Dogs are outside getting exercise. I’m being lazy sitting by fire

Haha it is balmy 76 degree in ST Augustine Florida today & Sunny! I am glad to finally get away from Seattle winter weather this year. But the summers in Seattle are superb weather. Summer in Florida is pure torture.

Interesting article about K2. I suffer from osteoporosis, crippling arthritis. And despite taking high doses of prescription vitamin D, my bloodwork still comes back low. Any new info is greatly appreciated.

Traction on my 1964 Corvair Monza was phenomenal. During the 1967 snow storm in Chicago, I was able to make it home, while most of my co-workers got stuck on the road or stayed overnight at the plant. And my corvair never needed snow tires!

I absolutely love my current car, Pontiac G5 2007. I bought it new and never had one problem with it. Good acceleration and fuel economy...upto 40 mph on long trips.

above for FR

I had an amazing father-in-law and brother-in-law now. I would pull in the drive way of his garage and he would be listening to the sound of my car and know if anything was not right. My husband on the other hand once put windshield wiper cleaner in my radiator. I had the cleanest car in town. LOL The only accountant out of ten children. I go out to the garage even to have a wiper replaced. They on the other hand call for advise and have my husband do their taxes. He’s very busy at tax time and working his day job.

You’re most welcome, mouse1.

I’m so sorry to hear you suffer from that dreaded osteo. What a horrible disease that arthritis is, so painful and debilitating for so many people.

I’ve found that Dr. Mercola is pretty much spot on in his nutritional knowledge, and have benefited a great deal from reading his articles (which I typically find when I read lewrockwell.com every day).

Both my husband and I have also found some measure of relief from arthritic pain when we stick to a diet that doesn’t include sugar and starches. It’s so difficult to stick to it though, because we have a lifetime of loving those foods! We did our best when we went totally low carb for a couple of years.

Best,
RWL

Growing up, we lived at the bottom of a big valley which was on top of a big hill/mountain. When the police chief lived on our street, it got plowed pronto. Otherwise, it was a complete disaster.

We and several of our neighbors owned corvairs, which we all loved so much. That little car would whip around all the other vehicles which were stuck in the middle of the road, trying to get up the hill. Oh, the memories.
