My alma mater, Yale University, embroiled in the latest PC controversy about the renaming of one of its dormitories, or residential colleges, named after John C. Calhoun, has announced a process under which students may petition to have the name of Calhoun College (or any other residential college) changed. One wonders however, if this will only be the beginning, rather than the end, because Yale itself is also named for someone connected to the slave trade, Elihu Yale.
This is hardly a new development, politically speaking, for Yale. In my day there were fliers in big 50 point font screaming "LESBIAN IS LUSCIOUS!" posted in Yale Station; Morse College hosted a huge sculpture of a giant lipstick on a tank, the statue of Nathan Hale was regularly defaced on the Old Campus, an oval pool that dripped water seasonally called the "Women's Table" was put in front of Sterling Memorial Library; and people wore pink triangle buttons and even giant pink triangle sweaters as a fashion statement. Viewed in this light, the Calhoun controversy is only the latest iteration of the restless urge to find wounds on the basis of race, sex, and class.
First the Calhoun controversy. I never thought much about the name when I attended; but now with a groundswell arising to change it, I have to wonder why it was named for him in the first place. Most people generally know that Calhoun was a pro-South, pro-slavery advocate, but did you also know Calhoun was secretary of war under President Monroe? Did you know that he was a Vice-President of the United States not just for one term, but two?

Yale fraternity Skull and Bones (not really a fraternity, but a 501c3 organization, btw) was founded in 1932 by Joseph Robinson. The Robinson family made their money in the Opium trade.
Trump should take away their tax free status and charge them back taxes. According to rumor (and past members) when a member dies he leaves 10% of his estate to Skull and Bones. They must have hundreds of millions of dollars.
No. Two times minimum wage would be about right, especially based on the product (or lack thereof) they are delivering to the world.
People fail to grasp the import of acts mentioned in the article: i.e. such acts are part of the total war being waged against Western Civilization. A war by the way the West is losing. The West will be the first civilization toppled solely by means of words.
I think there is a movement Bernie should get on there.
“If Yale is opening the door to renaming its residential colleges, how can it stop there, when Elihu Yale, whom Yale is named for, was also involved in the slave trade?
“As an official for the East India Company in Madras (present-day Chennai), Yale presided over an important node of the Indian Ocean slave trade.

“So how can Yale stop at renaming residential colleges? The answer is that once it opens the door to this, it can’t. Elihu Yale did good things and bad, but even though the university named for him is not (yet) associated in people’s minds with the slave trade, just as Calhoun College is not, that will not be good enough. It will never be over for the Left, even after Harvard and Yale become Che Guevara College and Obama U.”
The only hope to satisfy the young leftist heads full of mush will be to rename Calhoun College and Yale U. after persons with unimpeachable credentials: radical feminist, atheist lesbians of black, Hispanic, and Pacific Islander descent. They can do no wrong in the current climate, right?
LOL, that sounded like an Al Capp thing...:)
Idiots on the move.
Master? Time to market Slave locks....
Well, they are loosers then....
Ah, that is the rub, as put by the Bard. Once you open this can, it becomes unmanageable. Surely "William and Mary" (permitted slavery) should be renamed and next you find that even the place-named schools can be associated with something odious. After all the 'Battle of Princeton' should force that renaming (guns and death and Christmas!) The idiocracy potential is unlimited!
To the MOON!, Alice....
Pretty sad stuff, everything considered.
Sometimes the university is part of the problem in a crappy city. In a small city, a large institution that is exempt from property taxes can make it hard to balance a municipal budget.
i thought they were going to change the name because no illegal Dreamers wanted to go to yail...
Ivy Plague School
This Yale agitation, almost sixty years later, really emphasizes his point.
They need to wait until after Hillary is convicted of child trafficking to name the university after her.
From one slave trafficker to another—perfect for Yale!
