A former McDonald's CEO is laying the blame on the "Fight for $15" movement as for why the company is embracing automation in its restaurants. McDonald's will install self-serve kiosks in its restaurants around the country to replace human cashiers.
Lets start with automation. In 2013, when the Fight for $15 was still in its growth stage, I and others warned that union demands for a much higher minimum wage would force businesses with small profit margins to replace full-service employees with costly investments in self-service alternatives. At the time, labor groups accused business owners of crying wolf. It turns out the wolf was real.
Earlier this month, McDonalds announced the nationwide roll-out of touchscreen self-service kiosks. In a video the company released to showcase the new customer experience, its striking to see employees who once would have managed a cash register now reduced to monitoring a customers choices at an iPad-style kiosk.

The Left: solving poverty by making it illegal.
Logical outcome.
I hate kiosk food.
They’ll not get any orders from me.
Inevitable.
If only someone could have foreseen this! /s
Saw this coming.
Love the kiosks!
Of course. Why wouldn’t they?
It is just a matter of time before the drive through windows have voice recognition software and machines to accept the cash and deliver the food.
The value of human labor in these types of jobs is going down.
Bet they will be like my ATM machine and open by offering my choice of 39 languages.
The people will still make the food, but no one will take your order and say, “Would you like fries with that?”.............
Maybe the employees who lose their jobs to kiosks can get a job making kiosks at $3.00 an hour....
I’ll go out of my way to patronize the first one I see.
I think the food will be the same, the kiosk is where you order and pay.
These are in most McDonalds' locations (that I've been to) in Australia. They work just fine.
And yes, they came about because Australia has the world's highest minimum wage at ~AU$18/hr. (currently ~US$13/hr)
This is ‘common sense’ in business...you want $15.00 an hour to stand around on your cell phone...fine, you can sweep and mop floors, clean toilets, dump garbage, stock cups, straws, napkins...how about that for $15.00 an hour???
My nephew in the Port Charlotte area said he’s seen some there already.
Not happy with seeing this happen, but I’m less happy with stupid people making it necessary.
But who will forget to put your fries in the bag before you drive off?
