NY Post ^ | 1 December 2016 | AP

A person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated Press the league that wins baseball’s All-Star Game no longer will get home-field advantage in the World Series.

Instead, that will be determined by which pennant winner had the better regular season record.

As it should be! Now to get rid of that pesky DH nonsense.

I’m sort of glad they changed that, but it isn’t close to baseball’s biggest problem.

Baseball is being killed by free agency benefitting big market teams.

The sane small market club will keep a major league player 5 years and then dump them no matter who they are. Every 5th year they’ll have a chance for a “do you believe in miracles” type season.

If no one will pick them up, and if they have huge guaranteed contracts due to union rules, then I’d just cut them and bring in the newbies.

So now the allstar game is completely worthless?

Now the ASG will be utterly meaningless again.

This had to be one of the dumbest rules ever adopted in the history of organized sports.

Interestingly, we saw a rare case this year where the National League team benefitted from the DH rule more than the American League team did. The Chicago Cubs were able to add an excellent DH to their lineup (Kyle Schwarber) who was rarely used as a starter in the field because he was coming off a serious injury.

always was, and always will be; except maybe to get a player injured, a la Dizzy Dean...

There's a good way to fix that through creative salary cap rules, but I'll tell you that I've lost a lot of interest in some pro sports where you have the exact opposite problem: salary cap rules that are so tight that every team becomes a revolving-door roster of players all over the league.

I hate anything in sports that works against a team trying to build its roster over many years.

It's also worth noting that "big market teams" are starting to face their own problems signing free agents in many pro sports. State and local income tax rates are now a huge factor for free agents looking to sign in places like New York, Illinois and California.

I guess it goes back to the all-star game being nonsense. Remember when they did not care enough to finish the game. Remember when half the players faked injuries to stay at home.

I do agree, if you get rid of the DH I will watch AL baseball again. Right now its too boring. Pitchers at bat are a large part of the strategy of the game. Its very exciting to see the pitcher up to bat with no outs and a tie game, man on first. Lots of things can happen. A very tricky part of the game.

Yes. MLB All-Star game will become as pointless as the NFL All-Pro game and the NBA All-Star game.

I've always thought so. The players should be chosen by the managers only and not influenced by fan votes.....

With that being said, my only interest in the all star game is the home run derby.........

If so, then it's time to cancel it.

Baseball is being killed by free agency benefiting big market teams.

The only thing that would put an end to that is a salary cap, which, as we learned during the 1994 strike, is never going to happen.

Good. It was always a stupid gimmick.

I was rooting for the Tribe, but the fact that they had home field was a travesty. The Cubs had absolutely EARNED it over the course of the season.

Agreed on getting rid of the whole All Star Game deyermining home field nonsense. It’s an exhibition game; they should not have tried to give it false significance. Personally, I would have no problem if they just named All Star teams and didn’t actually bother to play the game. With free agency and interleague play, it’s just not special anymore. At one time, players were either NL or AL players. The All Star game was the only chance you had to see the best AL hitters fave the top NL pitchers (and vice-versa) on a eomewhat regular basis.

As for the DH, I agree in principle, but it’s not going anywhere. The DH gives older guys who can’t play the field but still can hit a chance to extend their careers and make tens or hundreds of millions of dollars in doing so. The MLBPA would never agree to eliminate it for that reason alone. Owners might, but what owner wants to see the ace starter who just signed a decade-long contract for a quarter of a billion dollars take a fastball to hos pitching arm and be sidelined? As much as this pains me as a baseball purist, both leagues should play by the same rules, and the only practical way to make it happen is to extend the DH to the NL. That will be a sad day indeed, though, if it happens.

They should just play an even number of games so no one has an advantage.

Baseball is being killed by free agency benefitting big market teams.

It was the former owner of the Oakland A's; Charlie Finley, who argued for unlimited free agency. Players would be free to sign one year contracts with any team they wanted and would be unrestricted after the term expired. His thinking was, players would be paid based on their performance for the prior year. Guaranteed long term contracts , he argued, made the players lazy and were over paid in the later years of the contracts. Who was against? Marvin Miller of the players association. Why? He knew salaries would go down for individuals who had a poor season.

The World Series should be a six game series. Three at National park and three at American park. Or 2-2-1-1. If a 7th game is needed, a coin toss before the 1st game should determine the venue.
