In July, the city of Dallas offered at least $3 million to any grocery store willing to sell fresh produce and healthy food in a "southern Dallas food desert." For the first time, the city made it known it had money available, advertising in grocery trade publications. Decades of pleading, of keeping fingers crossed, begat the promise of cold, hard cash.
But officials said Wednesday they never found a taker.

Council members had hoped a grocery store chain would agree to open at least one 25,000-square-foot store in southern Dallas and, preferably, one that could anchor a larger mixed-use development. The city's Office of Economic Development set aside millions from the city's Public/Private Partnership Program, which collects its money from Dallas residents' water bills and often uses it to offer incentives to developers.
The city set Wednesday as the come-and-get-it deadline.

Apparently, the racist store owners are afraid of little things like shoplifting ... vandalism ... spoilage ... looting ... flash mobs ... their inability to find good employees ... lack of insurance coverage ... endless lawsuits ... and rampant crime.
Gee, who lives in that “southern Dallas food desert”? I wonder. I wonder.
That’s right; it became a food desert for a reason...
Newark NJ residents have to shop in my town because it is impossible to operate a supermarket there. Our Wal-Mart should have its own police sub-station; stories fill our local police blotter.
This is the heart of the Dallas “democracy”.
I guess the only solution is opening a government-run grocery store.
That should be fun to watch...

They also remembered what happened when Walmart said they wanted to do something similar a few years ago - the Dems in City Hall were at the height of the We Hate Walmart phase and they strung Walmart along, then jerked the rug out from under them just before they were due to begin construction.
$3 million only goes so far now.
They bus them everywhere else, how’s about putting that money to bus them too oasis points of civilization so they an learn how it is really done as a stark contrast to what they are being told by their “leaders”. But, as by the rules of the hood, only two at a time in the store.

My first impression, never having been to the are south of Dallas was there has to be a dark reason for “no takers”. I’d suggest the city build their own food store but then, giving the food away is already a demodummie rule.
I hope this story is updated q 6 mos.
After reading the article, I think the people who truly want the out-of-control-feral humans to understand the beauty of a “grocery store” in a food desert may find they have a problem with their own vision.
I have to admit I do not stop in areas that look like Mogadishu or Somalia in our bigger towns. I make sure I have adequate gas, oil and a high functioning car before I enter.
Yet, I know there are decent people living in the food deserts. I wonder if there is a genetic marker we could find that would allow our nation to protect them until they create work, or find work, and separate out and consign the ferals to their own “city” with borders? (Visions of Apocalypse Now!).
Damn sad for the kids that grow up here, but who can blame retailers for wanting to stay far, far away?

The desert is survivable if you know how. That knowledge includes beans and tortillas
Looking at google maps for grocery stores in that area, I’m seeing...Grocery stores in that area.
In my state there’s a small city where government and non-profit peeps cry for more funding for ‘food desert.’ Right smack in the middle of their crying map of no food... has a full service supermarket - with decent prices.
Like a lot of problems, there is a solution.
Unfortunately (for those in the “food desert”) someone trying to fix the problem would be demonized and called a racist.
So until political correctness is killed, a stake driven through it’s heart and buried, the people in the inter cities will suffer.
Controversy around the Atlanta MARTA trains years ago was suburbs not wanting urban “desert” people to have easy access to “food oasis” suburbs. MARTA was said to stand for Moving Africans Rapidly Through Atlanta. Some outlying counties opted out for this reason. Nice thing about MARTA is you can get on it at the airport and get to town cheap. I was visiting my brother in Decatur and told him I’d just catch the MARTA from the airport and call him from the Decatur station. He said nope, at that time of night you’re not.
The way I read it is they are looking for a Whole Foods type of market to settle in that area.
And none of the do gooder hippie health foodies are taking the bait. Sounds racist.
The one in Monroe, our county seat, has that very thing. My friend had her wallet lifted from her purse there. Fortunately, it was found and turned in: the cash was gone (our choir took up a collection), but her ID and stuff was still there.
The good Ole “five finger discount” customers were probably a factor.
