Heartless family leaves escaped dog at shelter, adopts new pup

A California family is being hounded on Facebook after they were caught on camera doing their dog dirty — getting her all happy and excited to leave an animal control shelter and then adopting a new four-legged best friend, instead.

Heart-wrenching video posted on Monday by a worker at the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control center in Downey shows the German Shepherd, Zuzu, frantically wagging her tail and barking for joy after spotting her despicable owners.

The pooch had gotten loose — hopping the family’s backyard fence and then escaping into their neighbor’s yard — and was picked up by Animal control, according to the worker.

Zuzu’s owners arrived at the shelter a short time later, but not to reclaim her like the staff had hoped.

“Doing Dog Intros we got [interrupted] by a distracted and overly excited Zuzu,” Desi Lara wrote in the video description. “With her fast wagging tail seeing her owners Zuzu lite up like a Christmas Tree. She looked like the happiest dog. Yeah, she’s going home. But No. Talking to her owners they told me they were not here to reclaim her, they were getting another dog.”

The family had apparently grown sick and tired of Zuzu because she had been “crying and sad” over the death of her father.

“She wasn’t a happy dog anymore,” Lara recalled them saying. “Their solutions for her unhappiness was just leaving her here! And go get another dog.”

Imagine going onto an abortion thread and injecting the issue of abused animals.

That would be really bad form, so we never do that.

OMG!

Yeah, when it look at the reverse, it definitely illustrates how pitiful it is.

Yes, I’ve been around German Shepherds all my life - if their dog ran away and was “not a happy dog”, it was in the wrong home anyway. Ugh. They were probably ignoring it.
The poor thing will end up in a better home, after this cruel episode!

One of the first dogs that we adopted had been mistreated. We were staying at an RV park and the people near us were living in a tent and had their possessions stored in a van. They had a Lab puppy that they kept tied to a tree on a six foot lead. They lived there for over a month and we never saw them walk the dog or pay any attention to it. They would go off for days at a time and leave the dog and a cat a single bowl of food to share and a little bowl of water.

We saw the guy come back and kick the puppy one time because she had dug a hole to keep cool. She was terrified of him and would cower whenever he came near her.

One day they had left the animals for three full days and we had been feeding it. They drove up and my ex wife stomped over to them and said, “You aren’t responsible enough to have a dog and I’m taking it.” The guy shrugged his shoulders and walked away.

Sassy had the worst case of separation anxiety that I have ever seen. Every time we left her alone she would destroy the RV. She tore up furniture, pillows, and doors. We tried her on different drugs and they had no effect. It took her several years to grow out of it. She would also eat anything she could find and developed a weight problem. We had her for 14 years before she died.

She was a very sweet dog and her neglect and abuse had made her a little neurotic. She had legitimate reasons to fear being left alone and wanting to make sure she wasn’t going to starve.

The Downey shelter is not a charity. It is operated by the County of Los Angeles.

Thank you.

Such simple, obvious reasoning seems to be beyond some people.

We all know there are people who should not marry, have children, have pets, ETC... Sadly they do not seem to understand that about themselves and have to make others miserable in their wake.

I hope this dog finds a wonderful home, it would not take much to be better than the one he had.

If you are looking for a German shepherd to adopt from a public shelter, come to southern CA. Probably over 100 available.

I really don’t understand how people can be SO cruel to one of God’s creatures. My sister has two pups(We have to dog sit them starting tonight because they are flying to Israel tomorrow) Nemo the Pomeranian mix has a collapsed trachea, I would do ANYTHING to fix it, any dollar amount a guaranteed fix I would hand over the money, any amount just name it to make him all better..and here you have these two people who see their dog jumping around and wagging his tail and they just walk away

‘The dog in question will be adopted in a loving forever home.’

That’s true because there is way more of us than the cruel, heartless, sub-humans that did this. God knew this dog was not really home with these ‘people’ and the journey may be a little longer to find his forever home....but he’ll get there.

Zuzu has been saved by a rescue in Canoga Park CA.

German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County would have got him out but we just saved 17 German shepherds from a drug dealer in Lancaster CA and still have 5 left from a hoarding situation in Highland in April.

I hope they spend their last years in the nastiest nursing home in the world.

Completely alone.

Grandma’s next!

Kids, grams is just not as happy as she used to be, she forgets things and your mom and I have to change her constantly. A doctor also said she's clinically depressed, and here in California, we can now euthanize her even without her express permission since she's also got Alzheimer's so she can't make legal decisions for herself. It's for the best kids, it'll save us and the state a lot of money. And really what makes a person valuable anyway? Only what they can contribute to society. So since grandma can't do anything anymore it's best to scrap her for everyone's benefit.

That's great dad, so can we pick up a new grandma at the hospital when we take our broken useless one there to be killed?

I'm not sure Billy, it all depends what kinds are there, remember we don't want to get anyone who's not a productive member of society! Then we'll just be back in the same situation we are now. And that wouldn't be fair to anyone.

Yeah you're right dad, pretty selfish of me to ask huh?

It's ok Billy, you'll learn you're young yet. By the way you're over that knee injury you got last week right? That big football playoff game is coming up and you need to be a reliable player for it!

I felt so bad for the dog when I saw that. It just tears my heart out. Those creeps don’t deserve the love of a dog.

I have never “fostered” a dog (don’t think I could give them up after living with them for awhile), but all my boys and girls are what some folks would call rescues and I call gifts from GOD.
My wife just brought home a Shepherd that I guess you would call an escape artist.
I took a look at her and realized ‘this is just a puppy”, we got her into our vet and I had him scan her for a chip (she’s purebred German Shepherd) and guess what, NO CHIP.
Got her all her shots and started her on heartworm meds, she goes in to get spayed next week, she gets her chip at the same time.
She was given to my wife by some friends (they know us to well) who found her wandering in an industrial area in La Mirada, Ca. in Southern Ca.
Heidi now lives with me and her 5 brothers and sisters on our farm in Northern California (687 miles away).
Yes, she’s a runner but so is everybody else in her new pack.
To all those people who want a cute, adorable, puppy but won’t take care of it; SCREW YOU, SHE’S MY GIRL NOW.
My wife retires in June of this year and will be up here permanently, glad she was still stuck down there for this gift of a new family member.
