Family members of recipients and senior Obama administration officials surrounded the stage where the honorees sat, laughing as the president discussed the most notable accomplishments of each honoree.
"Ellen counters what too often divides us," Obama said of DeGeneres, a gay comedian who he commended for coming out on such a public stage nearly 20 years ago.
The president recognized NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabber for standing up for his Muslim faith "when it wasn't easy and it wasn't popular."

The “everybody gets a trophy” thing! Diminishes the value. If everybody is a super hero, nobody is a super hero!

Why didn’t I get one? :)
He gave one to a Rap “artist”.
Ergo, the medal is more worthless than a pike of sh*t.
Oh, forgot, it was crap to a crapper.
Play at fund raisers.

Partying while dead troops come home. I hope this bastard doesn’t live too long.
Truly.
And sadly, there is some real talent there. Let’s face it: DeNiro and Springsteen....not to mention Kareem and Michael Jordan are obviously geniuses in their respective fields of endeavor. But obama has to tee everything up this way.
You know what would be a good reform? Presidents should only be able to give the medal to people in the other party. Yeah, the democrats would have to find recipients who are not as much in the limelight. And they would never do that, because they are unable to see the world in this way. But just in theory....it would restore the legitimacy to this award, which, in an ideal world, could actually have meaning.
