attle catcher Steve Clevenger was suspended without pay for the remainder of the season by the Mariners on Friday, a day after he apologized for a pair of controversial tweets he posted on the violent protests in Charlotte, N.C., and the Black Lives Matter movement.
One of those tweets stated that the people protesting a police shooting of a black man should be locked behind bars like animals.
His apology came several hours after Mariners General Manager Jerry Dipoto issued a statement of their own, saying he was very disappointed at the tweets and the team is currently examining all internal options that are available to us as we determine appropriate next steps.
"The Seattle Mariners are very disappointed at the tweets posted on Steve Clevengers account, Dipoto stated. While he is certainly free to express himself, his tweets do not in any way represent the opinions of the Seattle Mariners. We strongly disagree with the language and tone of his comments. Friday morning, Dipoto released a statement on Clevengers suspension.
After two nights of violent protests that left at least 14 people injured, Clevenger weighed in with two tweets on Thursday. In one, he stated that the situation cracks me up!
Black people beating whites when a thug got shot holding a gun by a black officer haha, he tweeted.
In the other one, Clevenger called President Obama and the Black Lives Matter movement pathetic before adding, Everyone involved should be locked behind bars like animals!

Only if you agree with PC can someone speak freely.
What happened to ESPN’s vaunted support for “free speech”?
I’m sure they’re out there fighting this injustice visited on Steve Clevenger.
He should have just mooned everyone during the national anthem, he could have been a hero.
You hurt somebody's feewings!
Don’t you love tolerance? You better!
Pray America wakes
Black Privilege: you get to take a dump on the National Anthem during the game
White dis-Privilege: you get suspended without pay for saying the truth on your own time
I guess the First Amendment only applies to first class Citizens.
This guy is obviously not a first class Citizen, by someone’s standards.

Yep you are right.
Does anyone think he would have been suspended, if he went on Twitter in support of the rioters?????
And I would love to.know, under what terms of his contract, or the agreement with the players union, are they permitted to suspend someone over opinions on social/political issues???
Kaepernick has the right to free speech, Clevenger does not.
PC fascism on full display.
Pro athletes do have contracts that may limit their free speech rights or other activities while they are under contract since they are representing the team and are public figures.
Of course that applies to athletes on any side of a public issue.
If the team “picks sides” and goes after folks expressing themselves on one side of an issue and not another then a good lawyer could tear them to shreds.
I recommend Clevenger lawyer up immediately. He was not wise to inject himself into the controversy - organizations do not like controversy in the real world. They don’t want to be any part of something that isn’t their own business. The fact that football teams have bent over backwards to allow it is no help - they are just hoping it all dies away on its own after the election (which is what it is all about anyway)
The Mariners feel so strongly about this that they demand to return Clevenger to Baltimore and will take Trumbo back! /sarc
Don’t insult the animals.
The union should fight this. This is what the union is for.
I hope Mariners fans stay away from Safeco Field for the rest of the season.
Meanwhile, Kaepernick takes a knee.

We really are two Americas, but not Blacks and Whites.
We are Constitution loving Patriots vs. PC Commies.
Seriously... get to the bad part about what he said that was wrong!
