Trump's Throwback Thursday: During a visit to a charter school on Cleveland's East Side, Trump looked to the past while continuing to make his case for an urban agenda, cleveland.com's Andrew J. Tobias reported.
"If we can put a man on the moon, dig out the Panama Canal and win two World Wars, I have no doubt that we can provide school choice to every disadvantaged child in the country," Trump said during his 40-minute speech, which focused on education issues.
The scene at Trump's visit: Trump fans and detractors peacefully faced off before the billionaire's appearance at the Cleveland Arts & Social Sciences Academy charter school, cleveland.com reporter Henry Gomez writes.
"Fans of the Republican nominee for president outnumbered the foes. Their encounter was mostly peaceful, but hardly polite," writes Gomez, who posted a video of the encounter. "Most of those outside demonstrating against Trump were abortion-rights advocates who are upset with the New York businessman's shifty, but ultimately anti-abortion stance."
Background on Trump's charter school visit: The owner of the charter school Trump visited, Ron Packard, is a "major figure in the national charter school community for years," Plain Dealer reporter Patrick O'Donnell writes. "He's also made several moves in the last two years to be a significant charter school force in Ohio."
Packard said he did not offer his school to Trump because he is a supporter.
"My position is irrelevant," he said. "I wouldn't say I am a supporter or I'm not. I support school choice and what's relevant is the attention for high quality charter schools."
Trump's visit to CASSA was not without controversy, O'Donnell writes....

Maine is one of the few states along with Nebraska that splits it’s electoral votes 2 to the popular vote winner and 1 each for popular vote winner it each district.
Trump is already way ahead in one of Maines congressional districts and has got a lock on at least 1 of it electoral votes.
Where’s the governor?
I’d trust anything the Original G.A. says, he might not be the smartest man in the room but he’s honest. He’d have to be to survive a mob hit and keep doing what he’s doing.
People outside the state point to Christie as evidence of potential but they don’t realize that he has more national cred than he has here. He only won because of McGreevey’s mess and is widely loathed statewide.
“Now if I could only convince my boss (a staunch conservative) to vote for Trump. She is brainwashed by Glenn Beck! Ugh! “
My advice is to never work for someone that stupid and start looking for a better place to work.
Absolutely. Corzine/McGreevey were a disaster and they had nowhere else to go. But that doesn’t make the state a Republican stronghold or even a swing state. I don’t know why NJ is so stupid. My family moved here in 1960 - low taxes and no sales tax. How times have changed. Highest property taxes in the nation and they love it.
Yeah, because we all know that Texas—which is +8.4 Trump in the RCP average— is going to vote for Hillary.
“The swing states are:
New Jersey
Rhode Island
North Carolina
Virginia
New Hampshire
Connecticut”
Rhode Island is a blue as they come. Hitler would carry it over Trump.
NJ and CT? I think they are possibilities from Trump, but are still most likely to go to Hillary.
I think Trump gets NC. VA and NH are tossups.
I hope the state will go R. Maine is one of my favorite states because I’ve visited every summer since I was a child. So fascinating - above the Bath Bridge it turns into an America that existed 200 years ago. Some houses have no electricity - you can see the candles through the windows and they don’t want it any other way. It’s not my style but admire the people there.
If Trump takes Ohio, Florida and PA it's game set match.
I used that very analogy only yesterday to describe living through a Hillary presidency. Great minds, great minds . . . .
OHIO PING!!!
Early voting in Ohio begins Oct. 12
Please let me know if you want on or off the list.
Yep...
Glad to hear that, I hope he wins NC with big margins
These pollsters/media types are trying to keep to the story that Trump is a big loser and Hillary is winning everywhere
We all know the reality
And that is how he will win
Trump supporters will climb a mountain to vote for Trump
Hillary supporters won’t even get off the couch to vote for her
The enthusiasm is on the Trump side, and that is good thing
Remember Obama had all the enthusiasm as well and his supporters came out in droves, will they come out for Hillary who is about as exciting as a heart attack?
There is much to learn about ‘school choice” . I support a voucher system and opening up different models of instruction without encumbrances by the BEHAVIORIST CONTROL model from DC. I hope Trump is wide awake on Gulen TURKISH-RUN charters.....and the implications. If the DEPT. of Ed is dead and buried then we might be safe.
I live in that part of Maine of which you speak....I can’t wait to vote for Trump.
I saw a poll here on FR yesterday which mentioned Trump was behind by only 3 points in Rhode Island.
If true, that is quite amazing and portends well for other “blue” states.
“The Jerk”. Great movie.
