YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) -- Donald Trump sparked bipartisan backlash after the Republican attacked the bereaved parents of a Muslim U.S. Army captain who spoke at the Democratic convention last week.
Critics from both parties on Saturday questioned whether Trump had the empathy and understanding to be president, particularly after he questioned why mourning mother Ghazala Khan stayed silent during her husband's Thursday night address.
"He was kind of trying to turn that into some kind of ridicule," Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine said after a campaign event in Pittsburgh. "It just demonstrates again kind of a temperamental unfitness. If you don't have any more sense of empathy than that, then I'm not sure you can learn it."
Former President Bill Clinton, who joined his wife and Kaine at the event, agreed: "I cannot conceive how you can say that about a Gold Star mother."
Lawyer Khizr Khan gave a moving tribute to their son, Humayun, who received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart after he was killed by a suicide bomber in Iraq in 2004. During the speech, Khan's wife, Ghazala, stood quietly by his side.
"If you look at his wife, she was standing there. She had nothing to say. She probably, maybe she wasn't allowed to have anything to say. You tell me," Trump said, in an interview with ABC's "This Week."

Dems can attack the mother of one of the Benghazi murdered, who condemned Hillary...but Trump cannot do the same to this guy? This is the very definition of a double standard.
If you use your dead kid for political purposes, expect some push back.
Captain Khan, killed 12 years ago, was a hero, but this is about RADICAL ISLAMIC TERROR and the weakness of our "leaders" to eradicate it!
What I thought was wrong was the dad going after Trump for his son dying. Hillary voted for the war, Trump didn't. And that comment on what has Trump sacrificed? What has Hillary sacrificed?
The MSM is in a all out war against Trump now - even the NY Post.
His point should have been why are the Democrats parading Muslims while leaving out Baptists, Jews and Catholics. Are their dead sons and daughters not as worthy?
The truth is that Islam in its pure unadulterated original form is what killed their son and they should be denouncing Islam rather then denoucing those who want to protect Americans from Islamic zealots whose caliphate full of the chaos of war is being spread world wide through immigration. We know the ruse now that Islam is a military operation that demands religious obedience to the caliphate/religion. Muslims are the soldiers, mosques are the headquarters, the barracks and probably also the arsenals. The ruse is up Islam is not a religion but a military operation.
14 US Muslim troops died during the Iraq war. I’m proud of all of them. But, Muslims under represent in the US military, and over represent as recipients of US transfer payments. The fact that a dead soldier was a Muslim does not make his death more important than the others that died. Khan’s son died at the hands of a Moslem suicide bomber. What this has to do with Trump is beyond me.
As crazy as it sounds, I don’t think this was any political gaffe by Trump. This is the exact narrative he wants the media to be talking about at this moment, for whatever reason. Perhaps because he wants to remind Bernie voters that Hillary voted for the Iraq war in the first place.
Under Sharia it is ok for him to beat her and rape only counts if 4 men testify. So it is fair to assume she would not be allowed to talk even if he holds up our Constitution which says she has equal rights to a man.
Where was the tribute for fallen police officers? They booed the only mention of that.
Trump is absolutely correct to bring attention to the fact that a Muslim woman is NOT allowed to speak.
The Muslim culture does not recognize the humanity of women, or give women any right to exist. Why shouldn’t Trump point this out?
In any case, this is another incident where the MSM finds something a conservative candidate says and goes ballistic over it, getting every bit of candidate-destroying mileage out of it that they can. Meanwhile, when Hillary said that Americans with German names are Nazis, the media response was non-existent.
The reason is that he wants Americans to know that Islam subjugates women, Democrats are hypocrites for not defending them...and he wants Democrats to carry that message for him, on their dime and via the apparatus.

This is priceless, coming from the people who don’t give a DAMN about four murdered Americans, who could have been saved, but for the “What difference does it make?” Beast.
Trump! Trump!!
Kaine and Clinton - bipartisan - the latest talking point?
Yet it was perfectly fine for the left to criticize Sean Smith’s mother immediately after her RNC speech.
Trump didn’t even come near what those needle heads were saying about her.
Mr.Khan attacked Trump personally. He didn’t need to do that. Trump fights back....everytime. If you can’t handle that, too bad.
I agree. A democrat Muslim speaking at s political convention politicized his sons death. I saw no liberal empathy for Pat Smith.
All they can bring against Trump is tempests in teapots. Every time, Trump should counter with the real malfeasance in office by Hillary.
These stories need to be ignored and buried. By posting these to FR your are helping the media and Hillary to give this story traction. If we can’t help get Trump elected, the least we can do is not hurt his chances by propagating these anti-Trump memes. The low-information voter out there doesn’t know Mr. Khan from Mr. Magoo, but they will if this story continues to smack them in the face every day. So, give it a rest, huh?
