Less than 12 hours after he was booed for not endorsing GOP nominee Donald Trump during his late-night speech before the Republican National Convention, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz isn't backing down.
Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, the Republican vice presidential nominee, headlined Wednesday's event. But all eyes were on Ted Cruz earlier in the evening for his refusal to endorse Donald Trump. POLITICS Pence Makes The Case For Trump After Cruz Is Booed At an emotional event with the Texas RNC delegation Thursday morning, Cruz defended his decision to withhold his endorsement at a time when Republicans are trying to rally around their nominee ahead of the general election.
Sen. Ted Cruz leaves the stage after speaking during the Republican National Convention on Wednesday. POLITICS Trump-Cruz Feud Flares Anew On Third Night Of Convention "I am doing what millions of Americans are doing. I am watching and I am listening. The standard that I apply is, which candidate do I trust to defend the Constitution?" said Cruz.
"I can tell you I am not voting for Hillary," said Cruz, who also said he was "watching" other candidates.
As the GOP primary came down to the two candidates this spring, Trump and his surrogates attacked Cruz's family. That including tweeting an unflattering photo of Cruz's wife and alleging without any firm basis that Cruz's father, Rafael, was involved in the plot to assassinate President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
"I am not in the habit of supporting people who attack my wife and attack my family," said Cruz, who added he would not be "a servile puppy dog" to the Trump campaign.
Vanquished Republican presidential hopefuls, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, also addressed the convention's third night, delivering lukewarm endorsements of Trump.
Cruz said Trump should not have been surprised by the content of his Wednesday night address because the campaign "knew exactly what I was going to say." A preview copy of Cruz's remarks was released to reporters earlier in the evening.
He said it was "dismaying" that Trump supporters booed him from the floor when he encouraged Republicans to "vote their conscience" in November.
The first-term senator emphasized that he has no plans to campaign against Trump this fall. "I don't intend to say negative things about Donald Trump," said Cruz.
Meanwhile on Twitter, Trump criticized Cruz implying that he's encouraging people to vote for Democrats:

Cruz a “Servile Puppy Dog”? No, he’s the dog that bit your friend, maybe even you. He’s the dog that goes to the pound, that gets euthanized. Okay, for politicians, we vote them out of office. The RNC should kick him out of the party—he reneged on his promise, he is rejecting the party nominee. Good riddance to Lyn’ Ted. Let him be a Democrat and support the alternative, Clinton. Or, maybe go back to Canada. I won’t suggest spend time with family as we see the pics of him hitting his wife, of his daughter grimacing and trying to get out of his reach (does he molest or beat her?). Lyn’ Ted is bad, bad, bad. Time to be gone with him.
Keep digging Cruz.
***************
Cruz has been employed in some type gov’t job most of his working life. And as such
on the inside but not facing the public for election or his actions. Now he’s on the
electoral side of public service and his lack of experience is showing big time.
Same kind we have now.
He needs to leave Texas permanently.
Cruz is a dead dog
...but it's perfectly OK for Cruz's campaign to attack the wife of his political opponents.
who added he would not be "a servile puppy dog" to the Trump campaign.
...but if Cruz were the nominee, he'd demand that everyone else in the party be a "servile puppy dog" for him, or worse. Just like Jeb demanded a loyalty oath from everyone when he presumed that he'd be crowned King, but now won't reciprocate when things didn't turn out that way because voters actually still have a say.
I hope that once Cruz's first and only Senate term is over that this will be the last we hear of him. Maybe he can go back to palling around with his guru Alan Dershowitz at Harvard.
Everything Cruz does turns “messy”. Ate too many green eggs and now he’s got the runs....run here....run there....
“What about the pledge you signed to support the nominee, Ted?”
So after many years, by some miracle, the Repub voters get a chance to vote for an outsider who actually seems like he might be on the Base’s side, instead of the Dept of Commerce or a Dem tool like the current GOPe.
And so what do we see? Supposed rock solid conservatives like Lee and Cruz stabbing the voter’s choice in the back and refusing to pledge support, knowing full well they might as well be on Clinton’s payroll since they are effectively working for the Dems by disrupting Repub Convention unity. A breath takingly stupid move that the Dems are not dumb enough to do...witness the dramatic change of tune by Bernie Saunders...Dems move united and in lock step. Repubs act like cowards and children.
Tow Parties in America...the Evil Party and the Stupid Party.
Absolutely Incredible! The man gives a speech that would go down in the annals of politics as one of the best speeches ever and instead of endorsing Trump and then go take a shower, chooses to commit political suicide.
I was a big Cruz supporter and I watched his speech last night. This morning, I have no clue what was said, only what wasn’t said.
“...could have been graceful and supportive...seen as a unifier...”
Excellent analysis of the situation. It is so obvious to most of us and yet Cruz was too immature to read this correctly and his ego blinded him. Why not be manly and do the right thing and keep your word? ... one wonder why he lacks character ...
I feel sorry for his wife who has to put up with his bitter and ungracious behaviors. I bet there is a divorce in his future unless like Hillary she hangs on case he does make a come back which is beyond unlikely.
Not to worry Cruz, you’re a non-person with the Trump presidency. See you around in 2020.... maybe.
Yup!
Not endorsing Trump was a dumbass thing to not do!
I thought Cruz was smarter than that — he showed a lack of common sens, political sense and American sense last night.
YO! TED! TRUMP IS NOT THE ENEMY!
HITLERY THE HARRIDAN IS THE ENEMY!
Instead he will be a rat.
“No one asked or expected Cruz to kiss Trumps azz. All we asked is for him be a man and keep his word (that hed support the GOP nominee).”
The dude is seriously deranged.
He’s betting that Clinton will have one term then he can run as opposition. If Trump wins Cruz faces another primary fight, against an incumbent.
i think he would have had Chief Justice in the bag if he was just not so contrary. If he pins his hopes on election in 2020, well....let’s just say that’ll be a career ender......he’s not very perceptive at making good choices.
I started off being very hopeful of Ted Cruz as a candidate —but then he slowly unraveled before my eyes —Trump is now my man....and I think he’ll win in a landslide!!
Well, then, use that remarkable "gift of reason," which Thomas Jefferson recognized as an essential blessing from the Creator who is the Source of our rights, and think through what you just stated here.
Hillary and Bill Clinton, along with all the so-called "progressive" regressives, have been attacking your wife, your family, and the families of all your fellow citizens and their posterity throughout their political careers, and to refuse to back the Republican, "People-selected" candidate in November is the very essence of "supporting" people who attack you wife and your family, along with those of all the rest of us!
You are reported to have a find mind and love for "freedom." Use it wisely!
Citizens have been praying for and about this election. Has it occurred to you that perhaps God's answer does not come packaged in a "perfect" candidate, but one who can get the attention of a dumbed-down citizenry, sound the alarm, and then surround himself with people who may be more conventional in providing solutions?
Two further observations:
1. Perhaps your role is to be one of those people, if you can put aside your personal hurt.2. Perhaps you have found solace in reading the Psalms of David as you have gone through the past year. If so, re-read his life story and absorb the lesson you might learn there about a leader of whom it was said that he was "a man after God's own heart." Leadership sometimes is contained in less-than-perfect packages.
