In a surprising turn of events, climate change doomsayers have turned their attention to cattle, as environmentalists have been compelled to acknowledge that “livestock emissions” are more dangerous for the environment than automobiles.
A recent article at EcoWatch says that greenhouse gas emissions from livestock actually account for a higher percentage of total global emissions than the world’s 1.2 billion automobiles.
Whereas the transportation sector accounts for only some 14 percent of global emissions, cows produce a remarkable 14.5 to 18 percent of the global total, the article confesses.

If cattle are bad for the environment, what about bison? When Lewis and Clark explored the Great plains, they saw herds of bison that covered the land from horizon to horizon. Was Global warming any worse in the time of Jefferson than it is now?

In that sense, the closed loop system has become open loop. And self correcting has become self perpetuating.
This is true. Anyone that has ever been to a swamp and smelled that smell would tell you, it isn't exactly a spring fresh aroma you would want in your car or house.

Your post is the most valuable lesson from this thread. And it goes for burning wood for heat as well. The Carbon cycle used to be taught in school (photosynthesis was the hard part to understand.) But car emissions are actually not part of the closed cycle. The reason that livestock are being looked at now is that car emissions are relatively under control and the regulators need to move on.

The CO2 from auto emissions comes from hydrocarbons in petroleum, and those hydrocarbons were trapped from the atmosphere by plant life. When we burn the petroleum, the carbon goes back to the atmosphere.
It make take many years for that cycle to close, but it’s still a cycle.

Well, it’s a good thing that the planet relies on more than just photosynthesis to balance the system. Photosynthesis is just one short term corrective factor, the absorption of carbon into the oceans and earth’s crust are also corrective factors that respond to feedback from the cycle, so I don’t think we have much to worry about.

You have to go back and read actual documents. I believe the most honest takes can be found in government documents on line...at the Library of Congress. When a modern author on such subjects writes a book...he actually starts with the last line of the book....and includes his prejudices.
