Months after Donald Trump appeared to seal the Republican nomination for president, anti-Trump forces still have one last chance to force a vote on the partys convention floor that would throw open the GOP contest again.
Its a long shot, but by some counts they are remarkably close to getting past the first hurdle next week in Cleveland.
Mr. Trumps intraparty foes, led by a group of rogue delegates, are waging an intense behind-the-scenes effort to push the Republican National Conventions Rules Committee for a vote on freeing delegates to back whom they wish, rather than being bound to Mr. Trump.
The presumptive nominees team is fighting back just as vehemently, with an organized campaign of dozens of aides and volunteers. Its a power struggle that has prompted threats of reprisals and left many Republicans anxious that it could hurt the partys prospects in November.
The anti-Trump camp needs the backing of 28, or one-quarter, of the 112 Convention Rules Committee members, in order to place the issue before the full convention. A Wall Street Journal survey suggests it could be close.
All involved in counting votes say those numbers fluctuate on a day-to-day basis. If the provision gets the necessary committee votes when the panel meets beginning next Wednesday, it would place the issue before the full convention, where it would need 1,237 voteshalf the delegatesto pass.
Though a majority of the convention delegates are bound to support Mr. Trump, Mr. Evanss count shows just about 890 delegates are personally loyal to the New Yorker. Another 680 oppose Mr. Trump. That leaves 900 delegates who are presumed to be in play, he said. The stop-Trump forces would have to take nearly two-thirds of them to block his nomination.

Silly! Won’t happen.
Ah, the War Street Journal. They want US troops involved in every conflict around the world.
I will laugh my a_s off and troll the hell out of these traitors on social media should this effort fail!!
AINT GONNA HAPPEN. This is all the sorry assed establishment and MSM that keep this crap boiling.
if these s#itheads pull something off , they should be hunted down and ....
A riot on the convention floor, “is within reach”
The WSJ has turned into something that I wouldn’t even let my bird shit on.
Those who try this are effectively working for Hillary Clinton and the destruction of the US. They are the enemy and as dangerous to the survival of the country as a terrorist, maybe more so. The should be treated as such.
We want names.
We need to know who to expel from the party. And, we'd like them to know, in advance, that is what we will do.
Totally absurd. Will not happen. The WSJ had empty space to fill so ginned this up.
And who exactly are they going to give it to? Ryan? Romney? Jeb!? Cruz? Rubio?
If they give the Middle finger to the voters on the grounds that its “Their Party”, they can say goodbye to the whole thing.
Good luck with that and millions leaving the party, you RINO jackasses.
Probably why sore loser Cruz is withholding his endorsement.
Is this group headquartered underneath a volcano on a tropical island?
LMAO... Talk about delusional..
Fools and/or Marxists
Makes no difference if it fails or not. All a ‘win’ does is put it before the whole convention where an easy majority of delegates would slap it down. WSJ is just trolling.
