Holocaust survivor, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, prolific author and outspoken activist Elie Wiesel died Saturday at the age of 87. Wiesel was perhaps best known for his major role in promoting Holocaust education, and for perpetuating the memory of the Holocaust in the post-World War II era with his memoir Night, based on his experience as a teenager in the Auschwitz concentration camp....
The world-renowned Holocaust survivor received numerous awards and honors over the years, including the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom and the rank of Grand-Croix in Frances Legion of Honor, and he was knighted as Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Perhaps the highest honor of all was the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986 for his role in speaking out against violence, repression and racism. Wiesel was also the recipient of over 100 honorary doctorates, and received Frances distinguished Prix Medicis for his 1968 book A Beggar in Jerusalem, describing the Jewish response to the reunification of Jerusalem following the Six-Day War.

He did good work!
RIP Mr. Wiesel.
R.I.P.
God Bless you Elie for keeping the Shoah out there for all the world to see in its ugly reminder that people have been trying to wipe out Jews for most of their 5776 years.
RIP

The Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity lost $15.2 million it had invested with Madoff, and the Wiesels lost their own life's savings, reported to be around $1 million.
I had him confused with Simon Wiesenthal, The Nazi Hunter...
BOTH great men...RIP, Both of you....
Yes. A heroic man who edified many (under educated)American Jews.
May almighty God have mercy on his soul.
Didn’t he lose everything to Bernie Madhoff?
Their life savings was only One Million? Maybe he was true to his word, and did not accept money for many of his activities. Terrible that his organization lost over $15.Million to the other Bernie, who Made-Off with his money.
One of the great things about the book NIGHT are those editions that have the foreword by Francois Mauriac.
Wiesel was a writer and took some literary license in NIGHT but it was the work of a master.
Wiesel also spoke up for the proper remembering of the Armenian genocide at the hands of the Turks circa 1915-1919.
Mr. Wiesel is missed. Shalom to a great man.
Hurrah for Mr. Wiesel. He did the Lord's work. It is fervently to be hoped that the world does not forget the lessons he tried so hard to teach.
L'chaim, Mr. Wiesel.
Yes, and his foundation lost around $15 million, too.
Wiesel called Madoff a psychopath and scoundrel, IIRC. It’s difficult to think of enough bad words for Madoff.
RIP Mr Wiesel. Your work is and will be invaluable to us and to future generations.
I think you are thinking of Simon Wiesenthal, the renowned “Nazi hunter.” He passed away in 2005 but left a center with investigators to continue his work. Ofc by now I don’t think there are too many decrepit Nazis left....
Elie Wiesel was more of a writer and educator about large themes of the Holocaust, humanity, and Jewish studies. Wiesel didn’t have much to do with tracking down individual Nazi war criminals, so far as I am aware.
Losing this great man on Shabbat, very sad..a great man indeed..RIP Elie Wiesel
RIP to a great man. The world was better for his presence and will always be a little less for his absence.
Rest in Peace Elie Wiesel.
And may the mad Bernies rot in Perdition.
Somehow I feel it is fitting to lose him on Shabbat, that Mr. Wiesel is being shown the most beautiful Shabbat one could not even imagine right now.
May his memory always be for a blessing.
There are a lot of Holocaust survivors up there with all whom they lost. My dad just joined them this year as well.
