Newt Gingrich Has Climbed To The Top Of Donald Trump’s Vice-Presidential List
washingtonpost.com ^ | July 2

The Republican National Convention opens in Cleveland — we are all witnesses — in exactly 16 days.

That means that sometime over the next two weeks or so, we'll find out whom Trump has picked to be his vice-presidential running mate. Trump and his team have said all sorts of things about the timing of the announcement, including sometime soon and in the midst of the convention.

Either way, it's coming. And coming soon.

Trying to figure out a) whom Trump will pick or b) whom he is consulting in deciding whom to pick is, well, tough. But we do have some insight into where we stand in the process thanks to my WaPo colleagues Bob Costa and Karen Tumulty. They wrote this week:

Donald Trump’s campaign has begun formally vetting possible running mates, with former House speaker Newt Gingrich emerging as the leading candidate

The analysis of whether to pick Newt is easy:

1) Does he deliver a battleground state? No.

2) Does he enhance a complementary demographic? No.

What he would be like in office is completely irrelevant. We must win this election. Newt doesn’t help that.

Neither does Sessions, Cruz, Hunter, or Demint.

Moderator: Can you please send out an electric shock to anyone who brings up these names as VP? Thank you.

Hmmmmm. I don’t have a problem with him but there are a whole bunch of folks that really, really hate him for the contract with America deal. Not sure such a “controversial” pick will help Trump.

But if you need someone who has dramatically changed the direction of America and who is always the smartest person in the room, it is Newt.

It will certainly help with the veep candidates' debate. The Dem will be crippled for life.

Gingrich has is decades ago, yet he somehow has come out of nowhere. He is a globalist CFR mole. His mission is to manipulate or replace Trump.

He’s a smooth talking snake.

Freepers DO NOT FALL FOR THE WASHINGTON POST B.S.

Newt is a Gloabalist

Trump is NOT selecting a Globalist as a VP as bad as the Washington Post wish it was so.

Newt has a lot of baggage too and is viewed by generally, fair or not, part of the PROBLEM with Washington and NOT the solution.

Trump will pick a VP the Globalist fear more than Trump.

The VP will most likely be Senator Jeff Sessions a non Globalist.

I hope Trump picks Governor Greg Abbott of Texas. He is feared and hated by the Globalist.

Newts age is a minor issue, why can’t he serve for a few years and get a new vice prez. Trump can learn a lot from him and I think he’d keep Trump in line as to what’s best for the country. Whoever he chooses however will not change my mind about voting for Trump.

Mr Gingrich would be good, but he might have baggage. I want Pawlenty, Thune, Blackburn, Keating, or even Col. Allen West, formerly of Florida.

That is true. But Republicans will always snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

No problem with that, at all. Newt can navigate, except cleaning out that open Sewer of Columbia is going to take two terms.

I fear Trump will only serve one term.

I teeter between your speculation and Apocalypse Now!, myself. I love the idea of wicked rulers getting smacked down in the here and now! It’s fitting and right and does a people good.

He’d be a good Chief if Staff. I like him, but he has a lot of baggage, whether true or not.

Abbott delivers Texas and the Mexican American vote when voters find out his wife is Mexican American.

"my WaPo colleagues Bob Costa and Karen Tumulty"

Oh sure, two reporters from a newspaper that had it's credentials yanked by the Trump campaign claim they know the inside poop on the VP choice?

It ain't Newt. And you heard it here. If Newt has any role to play in the incoming Trump Administration, it will be as chief of staff.
