GOP Agrees to Vote on Gun Control After 15-Hour Filibuster

A nearly 15-hour filibuster led by Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut ended early Thursday morning after Republicans agreed to hold votes on gun control measures.

The Senate will vote on a measure banning gun sales to people on the terrorist watch list and a provision requiring background checks at shows and over the internet. Republicans may also offer their own gun control measures.

The filibuster comes just days after a shooting in Orlando that killed 49 people and wounded dozens others. Murphy, joined by most of his Democratic colleagues, recalled his own state’s loss of 27 people during the 2012 Newtown shootings and demanded a serious response.

I’d say the republicans are knee-jerk fools, but at this point it’s hard to believe they’re doing anything other than deliberately marching to the democrat leadership’s orders. Traitors!

A watered down terrorist watch list ban may pass (in the Senate at least), but getting off the phone with my Senator's office, the general view of the staffer I talked to is that there is no way 15 Republicans are going to flip and get the 60 votes for the universal background check bill to go anywhere (and Paul Ryan has already said he has no intention of bringing it up in the House, though I trust him about as far as I could throw him).

Anyway, it's time to start burning up the phone lines....

a provision requiring background checks at shows and over the internet.

Bloviating and negotiating for hours fighting over a law that already exists?

Instead of “no fly”, “no buy”, I demand: “no fly”, “good bye” - kick them the frigg out.

I read somewhere this morning that 72 DHS employees were on the no-fly-list.

Because half (or more) of the Republicans want the same things the Democrats want and they just need a little cover, like a filibuster, so they can pretend they were coerced into supporting them.

None of the Democrats want the things we want, so that tactic won’t work in reverse.

Caving in after only 15 hrs.

Must’ve been getting in the way of some other bill in queue that’ll wind up lining someone’s pockets.

“A watered down terrorist watch list ban may pass ...”

If it does, the courts hopefully will (eventually) strike it down, since that would violate the 2nd and 14th amendments.

So they vote, and go on record against it. Is there a big surprise?

The thing is: Guns are already out there. The people that don’t have them will get them in the next couple of weeks I bet. Are all those guns going to disappear overnight because the fed’s banned them? I’ll turn mine over when all the guns in Chicago are gone.

The way the GOPe has caved over the years, I'm not convinced they won't cross the aisle to vote with the 'rats.

We'll see soon.

“We WILL have a list of how the Senators vote on this farce...”

And?

They’re conspiring to infringe upon your constitutionally protected right to keep and bear arms, and you’re threatening to vote them out?

I think I just heard a bowl of laughter in the Senate.

The Dems have no hope of ever seeing a bill pass without complicity from the GOP.
