As I hoped would happen, American Thinkers series on TWA Flight 800 has prompted individuals with first hand knowledge to come forward. Mark Johnson is one. An air traffic controller (ATC), he worked the night of July 17, 1996 -- the night TWA Flight 800 was destroyed -- at the New York Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) located in Westbury, New York.
Johnson has provided me with his real name, and I have confirmed that he was in a position to know what he says he knows. He requested that I use an alias because he has children who depend on him. The federal government, he believes, will seek revenge, retribution and/or any other remedy they feel like. I would be fearful my pension would be at risk. I have heard this sentiment voiced by many people involved in this incident.
Although Johnson was not responsible for tracking TWA Flight 800, he spoke directly with the ATC who did. In fact, he asked him plenty of questions to prepare myself for the suits who were beginning to arrive. Along with several other ATCs, he viewed the radar tape of the incident. According to Johnson, A primary radar return (ASR-9) indicated vertical movement intersecting TWA 800.
An advanced radar system, the Northrop Grumman ASR-9 is able to detect a target in severe clutter even when the target has no transponder. The absence of a transponder is what distinguishes a primary radar return from a secondary one. In others words, the radar picked up a small, unidentified, ascending object intersecting TWA 800 in the second before the 747 disappeared from radar.

Also Doppler shift on the frequency of your radar return can tell you the velocity of something.
According to the NTSB report the radar in question did not record altitude data.....

The transponder in TWA800 would have been broadcasting altitude data.

Well, I have nothing to verify this information with, but a friend of ours claims to be ex-CIA. When 800 was blown up, he told us that there was a person related to the 1993 WTC bombing on that airplane. He said that’s what he heard through his grapevine. He was pretty shaken up about it, and told us in strictest confidentiality. Mind you, I have no idea if any of it is true, but it has always made me wonder.

It could be only a few people on board knew. It is not like many people on the ship, at night, can see outside.
It was my thought at the time that some of those Stinger missiles had fallen into the hands of a terrorist cell and they brought it down.
I can see why the Clintons would want to hide that little fact, because it would have shut down all international air travel just like 9/11 eventually did. Plus the US would have been liable for millions of dollars in liability lawsuits, which would mean a ‘discovery’ process that would have been devastating to them personally and politically.

Wrong. Doppler shift would still tell you want you want to know.
And all of them, every one, was said to have confused the trail of the missile for a reflection off the water. Sickening.
They might have blamed St. Bill, who was "too busy running the country" and had a "very important election" coming up.
How many incidents of center fuel tank explosions have there been in the history of airliner flying?

Does anyone else remember an animation shown on CNN that showed a small meteor striking the plane? Only saw it the once.

isn’t what the statement says. it says they had a hard radar return on a vertical moving object close to the airplanes path just before the plane went off radar. Didn’t state that the radar discriminated the explosion.
That hasn't happened in 20 years so far.

In 2000 the first paper on perhaps discerning doppler shift using an ASM-9 radar data stream was published, which has since been cited by 16 other technical papers.
That was four years after the accident.
When? Details please.
You cannot fire a missile like a RIM-66 Standard without everyone on the ship knowing about it.
