When I was in high school I could NOT WAIT for my drivers license. It meant some independence. When I graduated and went to college, I could NOT WAIT to move out, 1000 miles from my folks. I loved them, but wanted to be on my own.
There's NO WAY I'd have lived with my parents into my 20s.
I'm afraid the under-20s now just want to be taken care of, and it's going to come back on them big-time.

Guy leaves home.
Guy marries woman.
Woman gets bored.
Woman leaves.
Woman takes half of the man’s salary.
Man moves back home with his parents.
Then the women trash him for not being a good guy.
Yawn...

Maybe we need to look at the women in those age groups.
And the entire system in place now that gives men zero upside to being married.

I can see several very valid reasons why a young man is still living at home.
* Paying off student loans.
* Most women nowadays are pushy trolls who think a man should toss his entire life away pleasing her.
* Focusing on career is a lot easier, and you can take more risks, if someone has your back and your basic needs are covered.
* Solid jobs, with a wage your can live on and eat something more sustaining than Ramen Noodles, are hard to find.
* Have you seen some of the scary creatures running around, alleging to be women? Forget marrying that, you wouldn't want to even touch it!
I wish life had played out differently for my husband and I, so that we had the resources to provide for our children's college. Alas, medical bills tapped us dry for many years, so my eldest son will struggle with loans and debt immediately upon graduation. I told him that when the time came, he could live at home for a few years and pay that debt off, thereby enabling him to move forward with live debt free.
He's always been too focused and too hard of a worker to slack off in "Mommy's basement." But giving him a breather to get out from under the debt...I have no problem with that at all.

A former friend of mine, through fault of his own, got raked over the coals in a divorce (some jail in there too) and for now at 40 can’t afford to live on his own.

Well the education industry make an entire generation of indenture servants who have a decade of student loans to pay off. There are few jobs for the ones who did not go into nurse, scence or other technical degrees. At the same time, their parents cannot afford to retire, so the amount of job openings are fewer than ever. Therefore, we have the return of multi generation households.

Such a pity. The object of raising kids is to prepare them to be able to survive, and thrive, in the real world after you’re gone.
To coddle and shelter them into their 30’s is a disservice to them. To be in their 30’s/40’s and suddenly lose their parent(s) casts them to the dogs. To suddenly face the real world without preparation is like drinking from a fire hose. It’s overwhelming.

I have 3 living at home and they all have part time jobs. 19 year old twins and a 23 year old. All three are in college. Rules are, keep going to college, get good grades and they can live in my home rent free. Don't follow the rules, they are out. Two years ago my 23 year old moved out, increased his work hours and thought he could handle school and paying for an apartment. He ended up dropping out of school. Yes, some kids can handle school and work. Mine realized how hard it was, especially with the classes he was taking. We talked and now he is back at home and back in school. Rents are very high and finding ‘quality’ roommates isn't always possible. Sometimes it isn't about being a momma’s boy or any of the other loser reasons posted. Sometimes it is about smart choices, with end goals in mind.
